HEAD VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL COACH

Spartanburg High School is seeking a dynamic and passionate head coach to lead our boys basketball program to new heights. The Head Boys Basketball Coach will be responsible for all aspects of the basketball program including:
Coaching Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive basketball program philosophy emphasizing skill development teamwork and competitive excellence
- Plan and conduct effective practices that maximize player development
- Develop game strategies scouting reports and in-game coaching
- Evaluate player talent and manage roster decisions
- Coordinate offensive and defensive systems
- Supervise and mentor assistant coaches
- Organize and conduct tryouts and team selections
- Manage game day operations and team travel
Program Development:
- Build and maintain a competitive program culture focused on championship aspirations
- Develop year-round player development programming
- Coordinate with middle school feeder programs to build program continuity
- Organize summer camps leagues and skill development opportunities
- Implement strength and conditioning programs appropriate for basketball
- Recruit and retain quality assistant coaches
- Stay current with basketball trends techniques and strategies
Leadership and Character Development:
- Mentor student-athletes in academics character and life skills
- Promote positive sportsmanship and represent the school with integrity
- Monitor academic progress and eligibility of all team members
- Collaborate with school counselors and academic support staff
- Develop leadership qualities in student-athletes
- Model professional behavior and ethical decision-making
- Build positive relationships with players families and community
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Manage program budget and equipment inventory
- Ensure compliance with SCHSL rules and regulations
- Maintain accurate records eligibility documentation and statistics
- Communicate effectively with administration faculty parents and media
- Coordinate team travel meals and logistics
- Organize fundraising activities in coordination with booster club
- Schedule non-region games and tournament participation
- Oversee team uniform and equipment needs
Community Engagement:
- Build positive relationships with parents and families
- Engage with booster club and support organizations
- Represent the program professionally in the community
- Participate in school and community events
- Promote the program through media and social platforms (appropriately)
- Foster strong connections with youth basketball programs
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited institution
- Previous basketball coaching experience (high school college or competitive AAU/club level)
- Valid South Carolina teaching certificate OR ability to obtain coaching authorization
- Knowledge of SCHSL rules regulations and compliance requirements
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Commitment to academic excellence and student-athlete development
- Ability to pass background check and required clearances
- Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
Preferred:
- Head coaching experience at the high school or college level
- Playing experience at the collegiate level
- Experience coaching in competitive classifications
- Demonstrated success in program building and player development
- Strong recruiting and relationship-building skills
- Experience with video analysis and basketball technology platforms
- Connections within South Carolina basketball community
- Teaching certification in a core academic area
