Overview

Randall Childrens Hospital and the Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services Northwest (CARES NW) in Portland Oregonare pleased to announce that we are recruiting for a full time child abuse pediatrician. The specialist will join a well-developed inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary consultation program for suspected child abuse and neglect.

This full time position offers excellent opportunities for inpatient and outpatient clinical child abuse practice teaching prevention work and community involvement in multidisciplinary teams.

CARES NW is NCA accredited and is one of the oldest and largest outpatient child abuse assessment programs in the United States. It is a collaboration of 4 major health care systems and provides medical evaluation for over 1500 patients each year.

Randall Childrens Hospital (a 501(c) 3 organization) is a 175-bed new full-service hospital with Level 1 trauma designation a full time pediatric Emergency Department large inpatient acute care units and a PICU and level 4 NICU. The hospital has over 200 pediatric sub-specialty professionals in both medical and surgical areas including 24-hour Pediatric Hospitalist coverage. Responsibilities

Medical evaluations of children for suspected abuse and neglect.

  • Takes appropriate histories performs physical examinations takes photographs of physical findings as indicated performs colposcopic evaluations and obtains as indicated cultures lab tests and imaging studies.
  • Performs overall health screenings with referral and follow-up to appropriate providers.

Legally acceptable reports of evaluations.

  • Dictates reviews and signs (or enters into the electronic medical record) detailed legally acceptable reports of medical evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Reviews and corrects reports to ensure accuracy.
  • Includes diagnostic finding and treatment recommendations.

Assessments for suspected abuse.

  • Works in cooperation with other professionals in providing assessments for suspected abuse.
  • Makes all appropriate contacts with outside agency personnel either by phone electronically or in person to ensure understanding of relevant historic information and appropriate planning for the evaluation process.
  • Debriefs in a timely manner at the time of appointment with agency personnel and/or guardian to develop cooperative plan for follow-up on assessment and treatment.

Provision of quality services.

  • Participates in supervision peer review and quality assurance exercises.
  • Requests peer review on cases that pose diagnostic problems.

Telephone consultations to professionals in the community and state on medical aspects of suspected abuse.

  • May act as examiner of the day responding to telephone calls and contracts from other professionals requesting information regarding specific cases of alleged abuse or to provide expertise on general abuse concerns.
  • Assists intake specialists (or Child Abuse Assessment Team- CAAT) to appropriately triage cases of alleged abuse.

Promotion of community awareness of child abuse issues through educational programs.

  • Promotes community partnerships and program development regarding child abuse. May train other professionals regarding medical evaluations of alleged child abuse victims and may develop associated educational materials.
  • May provide assistance and teaching at CARES Northwest Program for child abuse professionals.

Expert testimony when subpoenaed to depositions or trials on cases.

  • Integrates current research into court testimony and is available as a resource for other staff preparing for court.
  • Makes appropriate arrangements for court testimony.

Continuing education for child abuse examiners.

  • Attends professional training for child abuse examiners and reads relevant literature.
  • Takes initiative to research and share new information on this specialty.
  • Attends trainings and fully utilizes available consultations.
  • Seeks input from others on own work.
  • May participate in clinical research conducted at CARES Northwest.

Provides call coverage for child abuse consultations or examinations as necessary.

  • Shares telephone weekday and night coverage with other child abuse physicians. Available to respond to The Childrens Hospital at Legacy Emanuel during weekend call as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

As a condition of hire and as requested throughout employment Cares NW requires child abuse background checks which are conducted through the Department of Human Services (DHS) Background Check Unit (BCU). This requires a signed release and authorization and the background check includes a search of DHS systems for any history of abuse or neglect of a child. If a record exists the BCU will report the finding back to CARES NW and findings will be addressed in accordance with program policies.

Education:

Graduate of four-year U.S. Medical School or equivalent. Specialty training in child abuse preferred.

Experience:

Minimum three (3) years clinical experience evaluating children for concerns of abuse.

Licensure

Licensure/Certification:

Medical license for the applicable state

Board certified Pediatrician or Board certified Pediatric sub-specialist

Child abuse board eligible preferred must be Board Certified in Child Abuse within 5 years of Board Eligibility
