Position Description
Concordia University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music/Director of Instrumental Activities. This is a teaching-focused faculty position with a primary mandate to build vibrant high-quality instrumental opportunities for both majors and non-majors. We seek a leader who will ensure that instrumental music has an unmistakable joyful and integral presence across campus life.
The successful candidate will provide artistic leadership and strategic direction for Concordias instrumental music program. Concordias current instrumental offerings include Symphonic Wind Ensemble University Band String Ensemble/Chamber Orchestra Jazz Ensemble Falcon Pep Band and the CUW Drumline.
We are looking for a builder-someone who combines disciplinary excellence with the drive to actively recruit students grow ensemble participation and elevate the visibility of instrumental music within our Lutheran liberal arts tradition.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensemble Direction: Energetically grow and lead instrumental ensembles with creativity and vision cultivating a culture of musical excellence and ensemble pride; plan and lead an annual instrumental tour that highlights Concordias mission and expands visibility.
- Recruitment Strategy: Serve as the primary recruiter for the instrumental area. Lead proactive efforts in partnership with Admissions including outreach to prospective students building relationships with high school music directors and representing the department at recruitment events.
- Campus Presence: Champion the visibility of instrumental music across campus through performances collaborations with other departments and participation in university events and worship.
- Teaching: Teach courses in instrumental music and related areas as appropriate to program needs and the candidates expertise with a preference for contributions in Music Theory.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with faculty and staff to integrate instrumental activities with campus-wide initiatives and community events.
- Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience
- Education: Masters degree in music required; earned doctorate preferred.
- Ensemble Leadership: Demonstrated achievement in instrumental conducting with the ability to elevate ensembles through visionary leadership and uncompromising musical excellence.
- Growth & Recruitment: Proven record of growing and sustaining music ensembles at the collegiate or K-12 level with clear evidence of successful student recruitment retention and program development.
- Teaching: Evidence of effectiveness in teaching mentorship and student development.
