The University of Alabama Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine Department of Surgery is currently recruiting faculty candidates to be considered for an open rank/open tenure faculty appointment as a Transplant Surgeon and Immunologist in the Division of Transplantation . The successful candidate will be expected to meet clinical research and teaching needs as applicable in the Department of Surgery. UAB has successfully completed more than 14000 organ transplants since 1968 when we performed Alabamas first kidney transplant. Today our nationally ranked hospital one of the busiest transplant centers in the nation performs more than 400 transplants annually including heart lung kidney pancreas liver and intestine transplants as well as multi-organ addition to our focus on patient care we also provide an environment that supports the education of health professionals and encourages advanced research to further medical science. The University of Alabama at Birmingham one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System is the only four-year public university in the states largest metropolitan area. The University spans 100 blocks in the city center with over 250 buildings providing over 13 million feet of assignable space. For fiscal year 2021-2022 (most recent available) the Universitys economic impact on the Birmingham area exceeds $12.1 billion to the FY2022 UAB received over $715 million in NIH extramural grants and contracts. As of the fall of 2022 the University employed 26000 people had a faculty of 3176 (45% of whom are female) and had a student enrollment of just under 22000 at the undergraduate through doctoral levels. The graduate student population is 64% female and 38% are among ethnic minorities. UAB is comprised of 10 academic colleges and schools in the health sciences and academic areas.
