About the role:
As a Senior Underwriter Surety you will play a key role in delivering profitable portfolio performance through disciplined underwriting and strong market engagement. This position involves assessing and structuring complex risks building lasting broker and client relationships and contributing to business growth across assigned markets.
You will operate with a high level of autonomy while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to ensure sound underwriting decisions and portfolio management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess structure and negotiate complex or high-value Surety risks using advanced technical and financial analysis.
- Apply underwriting authority to determine appropriate pricing terms and conditions aligned with risk appetite and business objectives.
- Manage and monitor an assigned portfolio reviewing profitability exposure and loss trends and taking action where needed.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers clients and market participants to support retention and generate new business opportunities.
- Act as a referral point for complex or non-standard risks supporting consistency and technical excellence within the team.
- Ensure all underwriting activities comply with internal governance regulatory requirements and control frameworks.
- Collaborate with Claims Finance and Actuarial teams to support pricing reserving and portfolio insights.
- Generate new Surety opportunities and assess inbound submissions from brokers banks and clients.
- Prepare underwriting reports including credit analysis sector insights and pricing rationale.
- Negotiate transaction terms and documentation with relevant stakeholders.
- Monitor portfolio developments and emerging risks while contributing to reporting and data quality initiatives.
- Support product and market development including research into regulatory or legislative requirements.
Skills And Competencies Required:
- Strong expertise in Surety underwriting including risk assessment pricing and structuring.
- Proven ability to manage a portfolio independently and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Advanced analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial and market data.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.
- Ability to build and sustain trusted relationships with brokers clients and partners.
- Solid understanding of regulatory and governance frameworks within insurance or financial services.
- Bachelors degree in finance Economics Business Administration Law or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Relevant professional experience (typically 6 years) in Surety underwriting or a related field.
- Proficiency in English and Dutch.
Skills And Competencies Preferred:
- Experience working across international markets and with diverse stakeholders (brokers banks corporates).
- Professional training or certifications in credit analysis underwriting or Surety products.
- Ability to mentor or support the development of less experienced colleagues.
- Strong commercial awareness combined with sound judgement in complex negotiation-driven environments.
- Interest in contributing to product innovation and market development initiatives.
