Junior Lecturer in Political Science

The Department of Political Science is looking for junior lecturers to teach tutorials and assess student work in our bilingual Bachelors programme.

What are you going to do

As a junior lecturer you will teach tutorials covering primarily academic and methodological skills. To a lesser extent junior lecturers also teach on core topics in political science such as international relations public policy and governance and political economy. Junior lecturers will be involved in the first and second year of the programme in English and/or Dutch.

Tasks include

• Teaching Dutch- and/or English-language tutorials in various Bachelors courses with a focus on academic and methodological skills.
• Mentoring first- and second-year students.
• Assisting in grading assessments for large-scale lecture courses.
• Providing teaching support for colleagues as needed.

Additional requirements:

• You hold a completed Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Political Science. A Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the UvA is a plus. A strong profile with only an Master of Science in Political Science is also acceptable. Candidates with a (nearly completed) PhD are considered overqualified and will not be considered.
• You have demonstrable knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• You have broad and up-to-date knowledge of political science making you suitable for teaching in various parts of the Bachelors programme.
• You are interested in and preferably have experience with teaching mentoring and coaching.
• You possess strong didactic social and organizational skills.
• You have excellent oral and written communication skills in both Dutch and English. A double proficiency is preferred.

What do we offer you

This is a temporary position for four years with a two-month probationary period for 0.8 FTE (304 hours per week). A smaller appointment is negotiable. Within this role 10% (3 hours per week) is reserved for personal development.

The Junior Lecturer Development Programme (DOP) offers junior lecturers the opportunity to teach while following courses and training that prepare them for the job market after the position start date is August 17 2026.
