Your role:
At About That we break the news down like a smart trusted friend. Its news explained. About That takes a deeper look behind the headlines of the biggest news stories asking questions that the audience is already thinking about.
In this role youll need to be a self-starter helping to build our explainers often as theyre being written knowing how to quickly get to the heart of a story. You also know how to engage audiences familiar with digital and social media conventions and story-telling because you also consume content in those spaces. You know the importance of getting it right and how to build trust and maintain it with an audience that isnt looking for news on traditional platforms.
Your programming sensibility is focussed on the audience and what they need. You understand the streaming news business whos watching and why. You are curious engaged and immersed in the diversity of experiences that make up contemporary Canada. You bring different life experiences perspectives and expertise to the team.
Along with your excellent communication skills and enthusiasm and creativity you are a committed team player. You are great to work with because you pitch in wherever its needed in order to get the job done.
Finally you are familiar with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and work hard to ensure the accuracy of your work.
The role is a full-time on-site position.
Key Tasks:
Chase quick turn stories for daily turnaround
Sourcing images and video for quick turn stories - including day-of.
Assisting with tele-prompter operating
Working directly with host on scripts and story production
Collaborate with other producers writers and APs on story development scripting finding visual elements.
Edit encode digitize and package material for digital platforms - as required preparing content for distribution to social and digital platforms including writing descriptions working with videoflag copy desk and encoder.
Assist in creating other program content including writing researching and/or editing for broadcast and online. Prepare scripts and ensure adherence to the style and format of the program.
Takes responsibility for packaging an aggregated weekly 30 minute version of About That.
Chase and organize the participation of interviewees creative contributors and other participants develop background introduction and line of questioning conduct or arrange for any necessary research and ensure the briefing of the host.
Creatively identify and produce visual elements that support the audiences understanding of a segment
Change assignments quickly as needed
Thrive in breaking news tracking down guests and information and collaborating with other CBC News programs and platforms
Ensure that stories guests and programming reflect all aspects of the diversity that is contemporary Canada.
Work early mornings evenings and Sundays as needed.
Identify and develop content that reflects the diversity of experience opinion and perspective - in particular those from equity-seeking groups.
As required - working with the Producer or Senior Producer assign direct and coordinate the work of other personnel working on the program
Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program unit.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Requires a university degree or equivalent.
Minimum of two years relevant journalism experience.
Demonstrated writing skills for video - including scripts & questions for hosts and packaged elements
Demonstrated ability to chase and book guests and synthesize information for hosts on deadline
Demonstrated ability to develop and pitch tightly focussed stories on a quick turnaround basis.
Excellent grasp of news gathering
Strong news judgement under tight deadline conditions.
Develops and maintains a wide number of relevant sources.
Demonstrated ability with editing systems and locating visuals from a wide variety of sources.
Strong news sense especially Canadian and International news and current affairs.
Must be thoroughly familiar with and understand CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Ability to work flexible hours evenings and weekends is required.
Must be comfortable and willing to train in a number of different job functions as determined by the Executive Producer.
Familiar with digital and social media storytelling
Capable of original and creative thought.
Open to new ideas and approaches.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to work under the pressure of breaking news while maintaining a cooperative relationship with colleagues.
Must be able to solve problems independently and with others in the program team.
Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Must be a team player.
