ABOUT YOU

We are seeking highly motivated professional Firefighters for different roles to join our Fire Brigade team:

  • Firefighter NATO Grade 4 (Entry Level equivalent to German B1 Level)

  • Principal Firefighter/Deputy Shift Leader NATO Grade 7 (Senior Level equivalent German B4 Level)

Working at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchenhome to AWACS aircraftisnt just a typical firefighting job. You will serve as part of a multinational Fire Brigade providing 24/7 protection for the base. Your role involves firefighting crash and rescue operations and continuous training to maintain readiness for any incident during aerodrome operating hours.

In a senior capacity your responsibilities expand to include leading and managing fire shift crews acting as on-scene commander and ensuring the operational readiness of personnel equipment and resources assigned to your shift. You will play a key role in both day-to-day operations and emergency response contributing to the safety and efficiency of the Airbase.

YOUR ROLE

In both roles:

  • Performing firefighting crash and rescue duties;

  • Inspecting testing and maintaining assigned vehicles and equipment for completeness serviceability and operational readiness;

  • Performing minor repairs on fire crash and rescue vehicles and equipment;

  • Staying abreast of technological developments in the assigned area of expertise and maintaining professional proficiency;

  • Performing general housekeeping clean up snow and ice removal;

  • Assists in additional tasks as directed according to your qualification;

  • For the entry-level role you must demonstrate a willingness to learn German language during the probationary period to ensure effective cooperation with German fire departments.

As Principal Firefighter/Deputy Shift Leader you will additionally

  • Assist the Shift Leader in supervising the fire shift crew;

  • Act as On-Scene Sector Commander or overall Incident Commander in the absence of the Shift Leader Deputy Fire Chief or Fire Chief;

  • Ensure operational readiness of vehicles equipment materiel and personnel;

  • Lead and coordinate firefighting crash or rescue operations at incidents when in command;

  • Conduct training (academic and practical) for firefighting personnel;

  • Support fire prevention activities;

  • Manage and administer assigned subsections including shift and leave planning;

  • Participate in inspections support visits to FOB/L and DOB/L and fire investigations;

  • For the senior role a strong command of German is required to ensure effective cooperation with all stakeholders internal and external.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

For both roles

  • Secondary education and basic training for specific task related skills;

  • Basic knowledge of firefighting principles and tactics as an active professional Firefighter;

  • Driving licenses appropriate to operate any type Airfield Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) Vehicle equivalent to European Classes C & CE;

  • Completed Basic Fire Fighter Training Course or Certification (Equivalent to German B1 Level: Brandmeister);

  • Physical Fitness Training (Equivalent DEU: Rettungsschwimmerabzeichen and Deutsches Sportabzeichen in Silber);

  • Adequate English proficiency;

  • Knowledge of German language (or willingness to undergo intensive German language training during probationary period);

  • Adequate knowledge of Automatic Data Processing (ADP) systems;

  • The following would be considered as an advantage: member of a voluntary firefighting organization and Emergency Medical Technician (Equivalent DEU: Rettungssanitäter or higher).

Additionally as Principal Firefighter you must also meet the following requirements:

  • Current professional experience as a Fire Crew Chief in an operational environment preferably related to an airfield;

  • Completed additional training course or certification for the Principal Firefighter role (Equivalent to German B3B4 Levels i.e. to Squad Leader and Fire Officer);

  • Knowledge of Fire Prevention regulations;

  • Experience in supervising training and exercising firefighting personnel;

  • Emergency Medical Technician (Equivalent DEU: Rettungssanitäter or higher);

  • Proven proficiency in German language;

  • The following would be considered as an advantage: Fire Officer/Deputy Shift Leader Certificate as aviation/airbase Firefighter.

YOUR TEAM

The Base Support Wing (SW) is responsible for the safe and effective delivery of all MOB support functions including the supervision of those functions covered in Host Nation (HN) Support Agreements. The Airfield Services Squadron directs and controls performance of subordinate Branches/Sections. The Fire Brigade provides 24/7 fire protection service for the MOB Geilenkirchen and fire/crash/rescue services during aerodrome operating hours.

CONTRACT

  • Serving civilian members of NATO will be offered a contract in accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations.

  • Newly recruited staff will be initially offered a definite duration contract of three years. Thereafter an indefinite duration contract might be offered.

SALARY/BENEFITS

  • Basic Salary as Firefighter: 4102.09 as Principal Firefighter: 4668.54

  • Salary values indicated in this vacancy notice are based on NATOS Single Salary Spine scale;

  • The salary is tax free including (where eligible) expatriation family and childrens allowances and additional privileges for expatriate staff;

  • Education allowance for children (where appropriate) and an excellent private health insurance scheme;
