About the Role
The General Service Technician is an experienced technician capable of diagnosing and repairing most vehicle components with minimal supervision. This role maintains high-quality work follows manufacturer standards and supports apprentice technicians while ensuring exceptional customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform all work on repair orders efficiently and accurately in accordance with dealership and factory standards
- Diagnose and repair most vehicle malfunctions
- Communicate with the parts department to obtain required parts
- Save and tag parts under warranty or as requested by customers
- Examine vehicles for additional safety or service needs and communicate findings to the service advisor
- Notify service advisor if work outlined is unnecessary or cannot be completed within promised time
- Document all work performed and recommended on repair orders
- Road test vehicles when required or refer to test technician
- Participate in manufacturer-sponsored training programs schools and events
- Keep current on manufacturer technical bulletins
- Supervise apprentice technicians as assigned
- Report machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor
- Ensure vehicles are kept clean and notify service advisor of any issues affecting appearance or condition
- Maintain a neat and organized shop area
- Maintain accountability for dealership-owned tools and manuals returning them properly and in good condition
- Comply with federal state and local regulations (e.g. hazardous waste disposal OSHA Right-to-Know)
- Operate all tools and equipment safely and report any safety concerns immediately
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Technician or equivalent
- Strong diagnostic and repair skills across most vehicle systems
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Leadership or mentoring ability for apprentice technicians a plus
- Knowledge of manufacturer standards technical bulletins and service procedures
- Excellent communication problem-solving and organizational skills
- Professional appearance and demeanor
Work Environment
Dealership service shop environment with exposure to noise chemicals and moving vehicles. Frequent interaction with technicians parts personnel service advisors and management.
