Job Summary

POSITION DESCRIPTION

School Nurse

Reports to: Principal and Chief Student Services Officer

Purpose: Identifies health disorders and makes decisions which can have serious impact on the well-being of an individual child or the community at large; facilitates the necessary partnership between the school and health professionals in other agencies; works with the pupil personnel services team (social worker psychologist counselor) and other school personnel in preventing health problems from becoming reasons for educational or social failure; identifies chronic health problems in school-age children; and helps students learn to cope with health problems that cannot be treated.

Qualifications:

  • Be a registered nurse with at least 2years of experience as a nurse in a hospital or health clinic OR
  • Be certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN).
  • Preferred: Licensed as a BSN or higher in nursing and certified by either ANCC or NBCSN.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act as the Alcohol and Drug Defense Program contact for theassigned school(s) providing liaison between schools and the communityby
  1. Organizing a task force annually.
  2. Conducting task force meetings and providing members with accurate minutes.
  3. Assisting with the planning and implementation of the K-12 ADD curriculum in regular classrooms at the assigned schools.
  4. Organizing out-of-school activities for students parents and the community.
  5. Assessing the need for instructional supplies and materials.
  6. Assessing the need for staff development at the assigned school(s) and assisting in its organization.
  7. Disseminating newsworthy information.
  8. Maintaining records for documentation purposes.
  • Assist in drafting and recommending appropriate health procedures to be
  • put into effect in the school buildings.
  • Consult with school staff on techniques that will result in recognition and
  • reporting of health deviations.
  • Collaborate with other child support agencies in designing a comprehensive health plan for school-age children.
  • Provide maintenance of health records and ensure proper use of health information.
  • Work with other support personnel to help children develop improved attitudes toward health education and assume personal responsibility for their own well-being.
  • Conduct home visits related to assistance with the remediation of health problems.
  • Administer and record medications given on a daily basis or as needed for chronic illnesses.
  • Plan and organize the school health screening program.
  • Make referrals to appropriate agencies in accordance with identified student needs.
  • Provide in-service for parents teachers and other school personnel on health maintenance and students health problems.
  • Monitor and keep records on OSHA mandates related to bloodborne pathogens and other OSHA health mandates when assigned.
  • Conduct annual workshops for all employees regarding bloodborne pathogens and other related OSHA mandates when assigned.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatments.
  • Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Working knowledge of Federal State and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
  • Knowledge of the school organization and its community.
  • Knowledge of public health problems and techniques for treatment in order to facilitate work with other community agencies.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school the local health department and community resources in the delivery of health services.
  • Ability to develop and maintain accurate and up-to-date records on students.
  • Ability to coordinate efforts with pupil personnel services workers and teachers.
  • Ability to write explicit medical procedures for others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Term of Employment: 10 Months

FLSA Status: Exempt
