Main Purpose of Job

The Chemist Supervisor provides essential managementtechnical oversight and regulatory consultation for the Maryland Water QualityLaboratory Certification Program (LCP). Its primary purpose is to protect thehealth of Maryland residents by ensuring the safety of drinking water throughthe oversight of laboratories responsible for public water system compliancenew well potability analyses and other MDE program monitoring.

As a function of Marylands primacy enforcementresponsibility under federal regulations this role includes:

  • Budgetary and financial oversight of laboratory fees and assessment services.
  • Investigation of compliance data required for Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) implementation.
  • Coordination of laboratory services during natural or emergency events.
  • Serving as Marylands liaison to the EPAs Water Laboratory Alliance.

Please note that the use of protective equipment includinggoggles gloves and masks is required for this position.

The incumbent will be required to drive a State vehicle. Ifyou hold an out-of-state drivers license you must provide a certified copy ofyour driving record from theissuing statesMotor VehicleAdministration at the time of hire. All individuals must maintain a driverslicense with no more than 5 points on their driving record to operate a Statevehicle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicantsmust satisfy the minimum qualifications to be considered for this position andmove forward in the hiring process. Please read all requirements beforeapplying.

Education: A Bachelorsdegree in chemistry or other related science which includes completion of atleast 24 credit hours in chemistry from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years ofexperience performing laboratory chemical analysis work in a public health orchemistry laboratory.

Notes:

of a Mastersdegree in chemistry or related science froman accredited college oruniversity may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Possession of a Doctoratedegree in chemistry from an accredited college or university may be substitutedfor three years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute Forces military serviceexperience as a commissioned officer inchemistry classification orchemistry specialty codes in the chemistryfield of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience andeducation.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified EPA Certification Officer: Qualified for Drinking Water laboratories.
  • Laboratory Experience: Over four years of experience as an analyst within a laboratory setting.
  • Management Experience: Two years of supervisory and managerial experience within local State federal government agencies.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.
