An opportunity has arisen to join the Pesticide Residue in Food (PRiF) Team within the Chemistry Section at SASA. The PRiF monitoring programme is required as part of the national pesticide regime and contributes to food safety and good agricultural practice. As one of the official laboratories of the scheme the team carry out pesticide analysis for several food surveys each year.

As an Analytical Chemist your primary role will be to assist in the chemical analysis of samples submitted as part of PRiF using a variety of analytical techniques. As SASAs Chemistry laboratory is ISO 17025 accredited you will be required to demonstrate you can work within these quality parameters operating competently and generating valid results thereby promoting confidence in our work. The post-holder will be part of a team of analytical chemists will have good communication skills to ensure all deadlines and quality standards are met.



Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the chemical analysis of samples submitted as part of PRiF using a variety of analytical techniques.
  • Perform appropriate tasks including sample receipt extraction of samples analytical data processing and tabulation of results.
  • Work with a variety of analytical systems and be able to scrutinise analytical data and instrument addition you will report and work to resolve any non-compliance issues when required.
  • Keep accurate records of all work undertaken and ensure that duties are carried out in in compliance with the requirements of the ISO 17025 and local quality management system guidelines and health & safety procedures.
  • Monitor the performance of laboratory equipment to ensure conformance with ISO 17025 quality assurance requirements.


Qualifications

Skills and Experience required:

Experience

  • Proven technical competency in trace organic residue analysis utilising chromatography mass spectrometry and allied techniques.
  • Experience of working in an accredited laboratory environment especially in accordance with standards specified in ISO 17025.

Required Qualifications

  • A scientific degree in chemistry or a relevant subject or a closely related discipline.


Working pattern

The post isbasedat SASA HQ Edinburgh and there will be an expectation to be on-site five days a week to carry out analytical activities within a laboratory setting.
