Job Summary

Description

Strathcona County is seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative Occupational Health & Safety Specialist (OHS) to support a strong safety culture. This role plays a critical part in promoting safe work practices preventing incidents and injuries and supporting compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.

Reporting to the Supervisor OHS Services and Governance the OHS Specialist works closely with department leaders supervisors and staff to provide expert advice coaching and support across a diverse range of work environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice coaching and guidance to support the continuous improvement of the Countys Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program implementation within the department
  • Contribute to the development review and implementation of OHS standards procedures and program elements
  • Supports OHS training and orientation processes by establishing checks and balances and by monitoring and communicating gaps to drive compliance and continuous improvement
  • Supports hazard identification assessment and risk control through guidance on formal and fieldlevel hazard assessments
  • Participate in worksite inspections and incident investigations and support followup actions to prevent reoccurrence
  • Provide subject matter expertise on OHS legislation policies and best practices to staff and leadership
  • Conducts regular reviews to support departments in maintaining accurate OHS records and communicating identified gaps or concerns to leadership
  • Support the department OHS Coordinator with initiatives inquiries and participation in the annual audit of the OHS Management System (OHSMS)

Qualificationsand Skills:

  • Post-secondary certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Environmental Science Occupational Hygiene or a related field
  • Minimum 4 years of recent professional experience implementing OHS practices in operational work environments preferably within the public sector
  • CRST designation (or eligibility) preferred
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations and Code
  • Experience conducting inspections incident investigations hazard assessments and implementing safety management systems
  • Incident Command System (ICS) training or certification is an asset
  • Publicsector experience is an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word Excel and SharePoint
  • Strong communication relationshipbuilding and influencing skills in a nonsupervisory advisory role
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and influence safe work behaviours across operational teams
  • Strong analytical research and problemsolving skills
  • Excellent timemanagement skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with others
  • Political and organizational awareness is an asset

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers licence and submission of a 5-year Drivers Abstract with less than 7 demerits
