The Senior Accountant serves as the operational core of the finance department responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions that keep the business running accurately and on time. Reporting to the Controller this role has broad responsibility across general ledger management month-end close tax compliance and financial reporting.
This is a hands-on role in a lean high-demand finance department. The right candidate is a credentialed CPA (or making progress toward a CPA) who thrives on technical accuracy can manage competing priorities without losing detail and is comfortable supporting ad hoc analysis and reporting requests from senior leadership alongside their core accounting responsibilities. The ability to operate independently and adapt quickly is essential.
General Ledger & Reconciliations
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger including equipment and parts inventory cash clearing bill clearing and balance sheet accounts.
- Identify and correct misposted or misclassified transactions across departments.
- Review and clear unallocated accounts receivable credits.
- Maintain detailed schedules for prepaid expenses accruals and other balance sheet items.
- Perform monthly depreciation checks and ensure the accuracy of fixed asset records.
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting
- Manage key components of the month-end close process producing accurate financial statements and supporting schedules on schedule.
- Review accounts payable aging reconcile vendor balances and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Monitor lease payment allocations and interest expense postings for accuracy.
- Prepare management reports and variance analyses for senior leadership including the VP of Finance and Controller with clarity and appropriate commentary.
- Respond to ad hoc reporting and analytical requests from management prioritizing effectively alongside regular close responsibilities.
Tax & Compliance
- Prepare and submit monthly sales tax and excise tax returns accurately and on time.
- Calculate and process property tax payments and filings.
- Manage Fleetguard rebate calculations and submissions.
- Support year-end audit and tax preparation activities serving as a key point of contact for external auditors and tax preparers.
Qualifications
Required
- CPA designation (active) or progress toward a CPA.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 4 years of progressive accounting experience with demonstrated experience with GL reconciliations and month-end close.
- Strong working knowledge of tax compliance including sales tax and property tax filings.
- Proficient in Excel and experienced with accounting or ERP systems.
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to meet recurring deadlines without close supervision.
- Effective communicator able to present financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance audiences.
Preferred
- Experience in a dealership heavy equipment or similarly complex industry environment.
- Comfort operating in a small department where priorities shift and versatility is valued.
- Experience supporting external audits and working directly with auditors or tax advisors.
Work Environment
This role is part of a small but highly capable finance team supporting a complex operation with significant transaction volume and high expectations from senior management. The Senior Accountant will work closely with the Controller day-to-day and will have regular visibility to the VP of Finance. Candidates who prefer a highly structured low-variability environment may find the pace and flexibility demands of this role challenging.
