Job title: Paid Indigenous summer Internship-small markets CBC British Columbia

Program Overview:

7-week paid summer job for a First Nations Inuit or Métis youth (18-35).

This role described below is a 7 week paid summer internship for a First Nations Inuit or Métis youth (18-35) at one of CBC British Columbias smaller market locations: Victoria Prince George Kamloops or Kelowna.

This paid placement is aimed at learning and discovering the news and media business.

What do you need to be eligible

  • You must identify as a First Nations Inuit or Métis youth (aged 18-35).

  • You must be able to work legally in Canada.

  • You must be available for the assigned workweek during the program to be discussed during the interview process (up to 38.75 hours-some roles have more flexibility).

  • You are curious about media storytelling news audio video and writing

  • You are open to learning on the job

Internship role:

CBC British Columbia is looking for a researcher to join one of our small bureau newsrooms in either Prince George Kelowna Kamloops or Victoria to help support our programming and community engagement teams.

In this role you will work closely with our journalists helping them find compelling stories and assist in content creation (audiovideo written) conduct research and interviews participate in production meetings pitch ideas help produce dynamic interviews and multi-platform content that spark meaningful conversations in our community. You will also participate in our community outreach and engagement initiatives.

The focus of this opportunity is on experiential learning in storytelling and media production. The goal is to nurture curiosity and grow your experience in a small location. The pace of the work will adapt to the pace of the participant.

Mentorship and peer support are provided by experienced CBC/Radio-Canada staff.

The ideal candidate is a curious and enthusiastic team player who is curious about a career in journalism and is keen to learn more about your community.

The successful candidate will be keen to grow and develop their journalistic skills in a busy multi-platform daily newsroom and will be passionate about learning new perspectives and championing stories and ideas from under-represented communities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Pitch original story ideas and guest interviews for news and current affairs programming that deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices

  • Help team members conduct pre-interviews write scripts and gather content

  • Suggest interview questions and copy for hosts

  • Help maintain contact databases and create briefing notes

  • Provide research and administrative support to program teams and community engagement initiatives

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Some experience working in journalism or related fields

  • Experience conducting research interviewing subjects fact-checking and organizing and presenting information

  • Ability to generate strong original story ideas

  • An interest in news and a connection to the communities we serve in B.C.

  • A proven work ethic and a positive team-first attitude

  • Willingness to learn and tackle new tasks

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague

  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture
