Why this role is important

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President Healthcare Businesses the incumbent provides overall leadership and coordination to a group of senior leaders responsible for managing all aspects of the brand and generic pharmaceutical portfolios at Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw as well as Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance. The incumbent establishes budgets identifies operational opportunities improves efficiencies develops strategic vision promotes initiatives and steers the business to achieve overall growth and increase profitability. The incumbent also has overall responsibility for the wholesale distribution of pharmaceuticals across the enterprise and for managing the Sanis business unit.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develops implements and monitors the annual strategy and financial and operating plans for our brand and generic partnerships and Sanis
  • Responsible for the strategic management of the annual multi- and common-year planning process for the pharmaceutical portfolio across the enterprise
  • Establishes and sustains programs and relationships across the enterprise to ensure our brand and generic programs are meeting the needs of patients and pharmacists
  • Manage all aspects of the Sanis private label business unit including product selection supply chain management market access and QA/RA
  • Manage the wholesale distribution function for pharmaceuticals across the enterprise including the management of secondary supplier agreements
  • Responsible for managing the quality and regulatory team overseeing the enterprise pharmaceutical supply chain and the adjacent Healthcare Businesses to ensure we meet or exceed Health Canada requirements
  • Work closely with the Operations team to ensure we are supporting stores in the management of the generic and brand portfolio
  • Establishes tracks and hold individuals in the organization accountable for delivering financial performance including sales new launches industry performance. Identifies and develops talent that can deliver best practices.
  • Manages negotiations on sensitive issues related to pricing and distribution of all pharmaceuticals across the SDM and Loblaw retail pharmacy network
  • Works closely with Finance and Legal to manage overall pharmaceutical portfolio and contracts
  • Monitors market intelligence in order to predict market demands and identify risks and opportunities.
  • Guides the development and implementation of processes and standards to ensure integration of data collection analysis communication and reporting is accurate.
  • Oversees workloads and provides staff supervision to ensure that work is done accurately efficiently and complies with policies procedures and standards as well as best working practices.
  • Provides guidance motivation and performance review including hiring and terminating employees to maintain and enhance competency levels identify future training requirements and achieve goals to increase performance. Builds a team of employees that has corporate culture of process metrics improvement and clinical production with total customer focus.

  • Requires broad based knowledge of the corporation and its strategy and a thorough understanding of the goals and needs of a strategic group(s).
  • Leads a strategic integrated group through developing the corporations overall direction and defining the groups purpose.
  • Requires extensive knowledge and skill in multiple disciplines to be able to integrate them effectively and a capacity to understand and interpret conflicting goals and needs of diverse groups.
  • Organizes a diverse function or integrated units by developing plans and setting directions.
  • Extensive senior level negotiation experience and skills required to manage in a highly competitive and /of adversarial circumstances where extensive skills in negotiation or high levels of diplomacy are needed.
  • Ability to work closely with senior executives of international companies to support Sanis contracts
  • Develops new techniques and innovative approaches to further continuous improvements.
  • Decisions are highly complex in nature involving multiple elements factors and interests to develop new models and processes to meet future needs within a framework of corporate policy general direction multiple needs and legislated compliance.
  • Adaptable to set and prioritize work with multiple exceptions. Able to work with diverse personalities and styles.
  • Communicates with clarity verbally and in oneonone or group situations or over the telephone.
  • Communicates well in writing by composing clear documents; facility with editing and/or proof-reading is required.
  • Computer skills to create and interpret reports documents spreadsheets and presentations.
  • Business acumen - advanced knowledge of retail operations marketing business administration and relationship management principles and practices. Sound knowledge of rehabilitation operational needs.

Education & Job Knowledge:

Post secondary education equivalent to a Bachelor degree in Business Administration Pharmacy or Health Care or equivalent. MBA is an asset

Experience:

Greater than ten years experience in pharmacy or healthcare as well as working knowledge of retail and specifically SDM operations or relevant field experience.
