Heritage Park is Canadas largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The park features historical buildings costumed interpreters working antiques and various exhibits that provide insight into the regions past.
Job Overview:
Under the direction of theInterpretation Manager the Public Programming Coordinator is responsible fordeveloping and coordinating interpretive programming for the Gasoline AlleyMuseum including the temporary exhibit space and the Historical Village. Witha particular focus on exhibits related to Western Canadian history this rolecombines subject matter expertise with leadership of seasonal staff andvolunteers to deliver engaging and educational guest experiences. The PublicProgramming Coordinator also collaborates with colleagues across departments todesign evaluate and refine programs that align with Heritage Parks missionenhance visitor engagement and contribute to attendance and revenue goals.
Responsibilities:
Program Execution and Operational Support
- Coordinate day-to-day interpretive programming for assigned portfolio of exhibits including program organization and delegation of assignments to Exhibit Supervisors
- Serve as a content specialist in assigned portfolio conducting research to ensure programs are accurate engaging and relevant.
- Develop and implement new interpretive programs and initiatives that enhance guest learning and satisfaction.
- Observe and assess existing programs providing recommendations for improvements and implementing approved changes.
- Support coordination of after hours and specialty Interpreter bookings as directed by the Interpretation Manager
- Prepare materials and venues for programs coordinating logistics with other Park departments.
- Complete related administrative tasks for the department as assigned
- In conjunction with the Curatorial department ensure proper care handling and security of artifacts and objects associated with assigned exhibits.
- Collaborate with other departments including Community Engagement Education and Special Events to support special event programming and cross-departmental initiatives
People Leadership
- Provide day-to-day leadership coaching and mentorship to seasonal staff and volunteers working within assigned exhibits and programs fostering a culture of inclusion accountability and professional growth
- Conduct regular check-ins with Exhibit Supervisors providing constructive feedback encouragement and recognition to ensure performance expectations and interpretive standards are consistently met.
- Participate in recruitment onboarding training scheduling supervision and evaluation of seasonal staff and volunteers escalating performance concerns and final decisions to the Interpretation Manager.
- Create a safe and supportive work environment by modeling Heritage Parks values promoting open communication and staff and volunteers feel connected to the mission and cultural objectives.
- Collaborate with the Interpretation Manager and other Coordinators to align team goals share best practices and ensure consistent application of interpretive standards across portfolios.

Required Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in History Museum Studies Communications Education Cultural Studies or a related field. A combination of relevant education and experience in historical interpretation program development or public engagement will be considered.
- Minimum 35 years of progressive experience in the design delivery and evaluation of interpretive programs or educational experiences for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated expertise in historical interpretation audience engagement or heritage storytelling with proven ability to translate complex historical content into accessible engaging programming.
- Minimum of 1 years experience supervising coaching or mentoring staff and/or volunteers including delegating tasks providing feedback and supporting performance. Experience overseeing larger seasonal teams is considered an asset.
- Advanced subject matter knowledge and demonstrated passion for Western Canadian history with ability to conduct independent historical research and apply findings in a public engagement context.
- Experience designing or facilitating educational experiences for children youth and/or adult learners is considered an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a track record of delivering engaging content to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects prioritize competing deadlines and make informed decisions independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word Excel Outlook SharePoint) and demonstrated ability to conduct historical and interpretive research using both digital and traditional resources.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-facing or public engagement setting.
- All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to complete a Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment:
- Professional business attire is required as this position must be prepared to meet with donors at any time.
- May be required to wear a costume during certain fundraising events.
- Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park; and
- Footwear as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department will be provided by the employee.
Hours of Work:
- The standard hours for this position are 35 hours per week.
- The schedule will generally be five consecutive days per week (Monday to Friday); and
- Periodic holiday and weekend work is required throughout the year especially during peak operating times; occasional evenings may be required
