Main Purpose of Job
This position acts as the Facility Manager and directs all aspects of fish culture activities at theBear Creek State Fish Hatchery Bear Creek Isolation Fish Hatchery and Mettiki CooperativeFish Hatchery. Together these facilities make up a coldwater production complex in the statesupplying adult and juvenile trout to support the fisheries put and grow put and take youthrodeo coldwater conservation and regional management programs and addition to fishproduction duties include supervision of staff development of project budgets management ofcapital projects and critical maintenance oversight of state housing management of physicalplant including an operational management connection with other coldwater and warmwaterproduction facilities as well as regional Freshwater staff. This position works directly with theColdwater Production Manager to establish annual production goals and projects to meet position directly supports the agencys mission of natural resources enhancement byproviding recreational fishing opportunities for Marylands citizens and visitors and supportingrestoration of coldwater fish populations (DNR goals 1 3 5 and 6).
POSITION DUTIES
The position participates at the Bear Creek and Mettiki Hatcheries to manage the coldwater fish production ofseveral varieties of salmonid fish species for fish stock enhancement statewide management needs put-and-taketrout stocking special management area trout stocking and youth fishing rodeos. The position participates ineducation/outreach cooperative fish culture projects and restoration of coldwater fish species for Marylandwaters. The position uses a variety of strategies to raise fish for stocking including intensive culture extensiveculture and integrated fish culture. Other strategies include egg incubation fry rearing and daily fish culturerearing of trout as directed by the Coldwater Fish Production Program Manager. The position is responsible for thecompletion of all daily fish culture activities maintenance of the facility fish loading and fish distribution by truckrequiring a Commercial Drivers License other duties as assigned and includes scheduled weekly and assignedweekend duty. This position serves and has operational administrative and procurement responsibility for theFishing and Boating Services at Bear Creek and Mettiki Fish Hatcheries.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology biochemistry environmental science natural science natural resources management botany marine biology marine ecology physical oceanography ichthyology fisheries management wildlife management or zoology and five years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree in biology environmental aquaculture natural science natural resources management botany marine biology marine ecology or physical oceanography ichthyology fisheries management wildlife management zoology or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and five years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
- Five years prior experience at a freshwater Coldwater (Trout) aquaculture facility and/or experience culturing freshwater coldwater species.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Position has experience culturing fish eggs larvae juvenile and adults in both tank and raceway culture.
- Proficiency in using spreadsheets and database software preferably Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
- Experience with driving a truck handling/trailering and hauling live fish. Position will need to acquire a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.
