Located in Milwaukee Wisconsin the Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) is the largest blood-focused research institute in the United States. With over 30 basic translational and clinical investigators the institute is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and developing innovative therapies related to blood and blood disorders. The institutes research interests encompass a wide range of topics including transfusion medicine cellular therapy thrombosis/hemostasis immunology and hematologic malignancies. VBRI is part of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus a rapidly growing clinical-translational research hub. VBRIs proximity to the Medical College of Wisconsin Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital facilitates seamless interdisciplinary collaborations. A range of exemplary core facilities support highly competitive the summer of 2024 construction of a new research building began doubling existing VBRI research space to enable the recruitment of 10-15 new faculty. With its renowned researchers strategic expansion plans and location in a highly collaborative environment the VBRI is poised to maintain and expand its position as one of the leading hematology institutes in the world.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Investigator the Analyst Research Bioinformatics is responsible for the analysis and integration of genome-wide type datasets to support hypothesis driven research. This incumbent will develop implement and maintain bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis and visualization of next-generation sequencing and microarray datasets. The Bioinformatics Analyst is responsible for the primary data analysis to generate useable data which can then be interpreted by the addition hypothesis-driven secondary analyses will be performed by the analyst in collaboration with the investigator and/or individuals with more advanced education/training. The expectation is that the primary analysis of RNA-seq microarray exome sequencing whole genome sequencing and ChIP-seq type studies could be performed by the analyst independently.

Responsibilities

  • Develops implements and maintains bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis and visualization of NGS data validates and qualifies software packages for research use.
  • Performs analysis of NGS and array type datasets.
  • Collaborates with Information Services for the maintenance and archiving of data.
  • Maintains databases of data and projects
  • Works with Principal Investigator to support research projects as needed.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in the lab to analyze and integrate different types of datasets.
  • Coordinates internal and external resources necessary for completion of a research plan.
  • Provides direction to Technologists and Technicians.
  • Generates clear and complete records of experimental work.
  • Communicates results of research at meetings.
  • Participates in publication and presentation of research.
  • Participates in professional activities to maintain current state of knowledge of bioinformatics.
  • Adheres to all required regulations (BloodCenter NIH HIPAA etc.)
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Biology Engineering Computer Science or Bioinformatics at minimum. required
  • Masters Degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics preferred

Experience

  • 1-3 years experience with next generation sequencing analysis and bioinformatics tools required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership skills required
  • Strong foundation in software requirements analysis required
  • Foundation in computational algorithm design required
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as R Perl Python Java and/or CWell developed interpersonal and teamwork skills required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required
  • Strong critical thinking and analysis skills. required
  • Ability to collaborate with IT staff and external sources to utilize databases hardware and additional tools. required
  • Working knowledge and experience with various database systems preferred required
