Custodian Public Spaces (Casual)

Reporting to the Supervisor Parks and Community Services the Custodian Public Spaces is responsible for general sanitation duties in public spaces trails parks and outdoor facilities including social disorder community clean-up waste collection and operation related sanitation equipment as required. This work includes clean-up of illegal dumping abandoned item collection and cleanup and removal of animal and human waste and sharps. Also clean-up of litter and debris spot cleaning graffiti removal pressure washing and spray disinfectant. The purpose of the role is to keep the North Cowichan downtown core in a clean condition while also positively interacting with the public when necessary. The downtown core consists of public areas within North Cowichan south of Beverly Street and west of Lakes Road including the Dyke Trail. Hours of work may include shift nights and weekend work depending on demand. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.

Required Skills Qualifications and Abilities:

1. Completion of Grade 12.
2. Building Service Worker certificate or an equivalent level of training and experience.
3. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Drivers License; a satisfactory current drivers abstract will be required.
4. Knowledge of the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in sanitation and public space clean-up.
5. Knowledge of the theory of cleaning for health.
6. Demonstrable theory and practical skills and abilities related to the delivery of customer service facility cleaning/ sanitation and disinfection routines and practices.
7. Demonstrable keyboard skills and the ability to work within a Windows networked environment including the practical use of Microsoft Office programs including Outlook and Excel or comparable programs.
8. Working knowledge of and commitment to WorkSafeBC regulations and safety procedures and other related regulatory requirements as related to sanitation and public space clean-up.
9. Ability to communicate establish and maintain working relationships and communicate well with other staff and the general public.
10. Ability to do data entry write simple work procedures and maintain basic records.
11. Ability to work with minimum supervision.
12. Ability to perform physical custodian tasks and duties.
13. Ability to work nights weekends evenings and shifts.
14. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.

Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills qualifications and abilities. This position has responsibility for vulnerable persons and will therefore be required to undergo a Vulnerable Sector screening check in addition to a Police Information Check if an offer of employment is made.
