START DATE: Anticipated 1st day of school for the 2026-2027 school year

SUMMARY:
The Portuguese Language Development Specialist will provide support to multilingual students within the area of Portuguese language and literacy. The Portuguese Language Development Specialist is primarily responsible for working with small groups of students in the implementation of evidence-based literacy and language development instructional practices to improve biliteracy achievement in the school. Responsibility for direct service to students in need of intense Portuguese literacy interventions in Grades 5-7 is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with the Principal Curriculum Directors Instructional Coach and Portuguese Language Development Specialist colleagues in the crafting of school and district-wide plans for Portuguese language and literacy development.
- Assist the Principal in reviewing building assessment data to recommend and support district-level biliteracy improvement goals.
- Provide support for the implementation of strategies and approaches that address language and literacy development for multilingual learners.
- Provide building-based professional development through classroom modeling observation discussion and presentation.
- Identify resources to enhance Portuguese units of study and classroom libraries.
- Manage the printing and distribution of Portuguese language resources aligned with the core curriculum.
- Lead and coordinate school based Portuguese literacy assessment analyze formative data and recommend appropriate Portuguese literacy development plans for qualifying individual students.
- Model ways in which to use data to inform instruction for individual students.
- Develop model observe and monitor interventions in regular and special education settings.
- Monitor progress of struggling students in response to instructional approaches and interventions.
- Work with administrators and instructional staff to identify resources and educational needs of the schools parents to support reading improvement.
- Coordinate caregiver education in biliteracy improvement activities.
- Provide for his/her own professional growth by attending demonstrations in-service courses workshops seminars conferences etc. as approved by the Principal and Curriculum Director(s).
Qualifications:
- DESE license - Portuguese 1-6 license Required
- DESE Endorsement - BEE (Bilingual Education Endorsement) required
- High level of proficiency in Portuguese (Advanced-High or Superior). Individuals with this level of proficiency in the language have generally completed advanced academic work in that language.
- Masters degree in pedagogy literacy or elementary education
- Three to five years prior K 5 teaching experience; preference for individuals with experiences at a variety of elementary levels
- Excellent communication skills and willingness to train teachers in use of programs or new curricular initiatives.
- Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI) and fingerprints
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Hudson School Committees policy on evaluation or in accordance with union contract.

While performing duties of this job the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have also have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e. calculator copy machine and computer printer).Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling stooping/crouching reaching/handling talking/hearing conversations and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students staff members and the public in person and on the telephone.
