Job Summary

The House of Commons Office of the Sergeant at Arms and Corporate Security is currently looking to staff the Senior Officer Fire Prevention and Emergency Preparedness position.

This recruitment and selection process is restricted to employees of the House of Commons and Parliamentary Partners.  

The Senior Officer Fire Prevention and Emergency Preparedness leads fire prevention and emergency preparedness programs for the House of Commons across the Parliamentary Precinct. This role is responsible for protecting the safety of Members of Parliament employees and visitors by ensuring effective plans systems and procedures are in place to prevent prepare for and respond to fires and other emergency situations.

This position works closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and provides expert advice on fire prevention and emergency preparedness. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe and secure parliamentary environment.

Additional functions include:

  • Delivering training or briefings on areas of expertise
  • Representing the function in discussions or exchanges with internal or external partners
  • Liaising with multidisciplinary stakeholders to support information sharing and awareness

Qualifications :

Education :

  • Post secondary education in emergency and security management studies or an acceptable combination of education training and experience;
  • A certification in fire fighting or in a related field.

Experiences :

  • Experience planning developing and managing fire prevention or emergency preparedness programs within a high-profile institutional environment;
  • Experience developing implementing and testing emergency response plans evacuation procedures lockdown protocols and preparedness exercises; 
  • Experience in interpreting and applying standards providing expert advice and recommendations to senior management and stakeholders;
  • Experience in contributing to large-scale projects to ensure compliance with fire safety standards and emergency preparedness requirements;
  • Experience in developing operational policies procedures training programs and awareness materials;
  • Experience overseeing human or project resources including oversight of external service providers.

Assets :

  • Recent supervisory experience;
  • Accreditation with agencies such as the National Research Council National Fire Protection Associations (US) Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs National Association of Fire Investigators Canadian Association of Fire Investigators Canadian Fire Safety Association Canada Fire Alarm Association and the National Capital-Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Response Team (CBRN);
  • Experience dealing directly with Parliamentarians and House Officials.
