Description of Work

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Reporting to the Associate Warden of Custody and Operations this position is responsible for assisting in planning supervising and coordinating activities in a minimum-custody female facility. This positions responsibilities include the following:

• Supervise Correctional Sergeant Is.
• May serve as the Officer-In-Charge (OIC).
• Assist in officers work schedule and coordinating activities involving the discipline security and the welfare of the offender population.
• Responsibilities are primarily custodial in nature serving as shift supervisor.
• Coordinate actions such as employee leave requests monthly reports offender problems and other activities relative to a correctional facility.
• Conduct inspections of housing units and other buildings grounds and posts to ascertain that officers are alert that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are carried out properly.
• Review investigations regarding security issues incidents disputes and complaints.
• Assist in assessing evaluating and implementing employee discipline.
• May serve on the offender classification committee.
• Prepare a variety of records and reports related to custody operations.
• Perform other related duties as required.

This is a full-time position with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position isNC08 Salary Range ($39244 - $68679.) State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Western Correctional Center for Women (WCCW):

Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7 2008 and is a minimum custody facility housing approx. 366 female offenders located in Black Mountain NC. WCCW renovated four dormitories on a 100 acre compound: Greenwood Frye Sloop and Gilliat. Renovations on the vocation building provided offenders with an educational classroom and an operating greenhouse. Renovations to the Buchanan building accommodated the increasing offender population and offer more educational classrooms and a medical wing. On Oct. 4 2021 the facilitys name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Management Preferences:

• Documented knowledge of facility operations and/or Prisons policy and procedures.
• Documented report writing skills.
