PRIMARY FUNCTION: SECEP is looking for a Reading Specialist to provide support and leadership to staff and teachers on the implementation of peer-reviewed evidence-based reading instructional practices to improve reading achievement and support all areas of instruction and programming. Additionally the selected candidate will contribute to the professional growth of staff in a collaborative and supportive manner and design and implement an effective plan to provide instructional staff with the skills and strategies necessary to enhance the literacy development of our students. The position will be based in the Norfolk Virginia area and services will be provided throughout greater Southside Hampton Roads. The ability to perform outreach in the community and consult with school district personnel will be essential to success in this position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters Degree in Education or related
- Possess or be eligible for a Virginia License as a Reading
- A minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience in the collection analysis and presentation of data to support instruction and
SUPERVISION:This position reports to the Associate Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with administration and staff in supporting the implementation of literacy programs and procedures in the classroom.
- Plan organize and execute workshops in-services demonstrations and trainings to support the professional growth of teachers and support staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to design implement and monitor a comprehensive reading plan that best fits the needs of the student population.
- Orient new teachers to the philosophy procedures and materials needed to teach reading
- Meet with the administration to discuss the effectiveness of ongoing programs/ frameworks and make recommendations for change.
- Observe literacy instruction in the classroom and make recommendations based upon those
- Work together with classroom teachers and support staff on matters relating to reading
- Recommend appropriate materials to aid reading
- Assist teachers with differentiation according to student
- Assess and analyze students reading ability and make recommendations based upon results/data.
- Remain knowledgeable of evidence-based literacy practices programs materials and software that are available for use in the classroom.
- Expand own professional growth of reading literacy knowledge and practice by attending workshops in-services conferences and/or staying current with professional literature.
- Work within a team environment to build relationships with colleagues external service agencies representatives of other school divisions and all other stakeholders as necessary.

- Physical Ability: Tasks may involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing stooping kneeling crouching and crawling and that may involve the lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or workstation.
- Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communication ability.
