The Resilience & Emergency Management (REM) directorate strengthens whole-energy-system resilience by being a catalyst for change turning insight into coordinated prioritised action that reduces risk and builds capability across the system. REM delivers this through analysis assessments reviews emergency exercises and plans that drive tangible improvements with our partners.
This role is to build andlead the team that connects insights trends and priorities across REM NESOand the wider energy system. The team builds andmaintainsa live picture of how resilient the energy system is - understanding what is happening across REMs work programme and what isemergingexternally - to help NESO and its partners focus their efforts where they will make the biggest difference.
This role can be based from Wokingham Warwick Glasgow and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants as well as flexible working arrangements.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO) (External)
In Autumn of 2024 the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO) the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britains electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
NESO including all of its existing roles are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO we will build on our existing roles capabilities and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors including electricity natural gas and hydrogen and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors with complete operational independence from government the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable affordable and secure way for all.
Key Accountabilities
- Bring together insights on energy system resilience and risk from across REM NESO government industry and research partners.
- Draw together insights from across the directorates specialist teams identifying connections gaps and emerging themes that no single team would see alone.
- Connect resilience perspectives from across REM NESO and the wider energy landscape into a coherent and coordinated narrative that underpins all REM work and informs its insights and recommendations.
- Maintain awareness of the external environment through horizon scanning stakeholder engagement and REM risks insights using this to guide prioritisation and identify the most effective routes to deliver insights and recommendations that catalyse real change.
- Provide strategic steer to specialist teams on the wider system significance of their work helping translate technical analysis into clear implications for decision-makers.
- Advise REM senior leadership on where and when to focus resources - annually quarterly and in response to emerging issues grounded in evidence and a clear view of system priorities.
- Develop approaches to measuring REMs real-world impact on energy system resilience moving beyond tracking outputs to understanding whether work is driving meaningful change
- Produce high-quality intelligence summaries and briefings that inform senior decision making engagement with government and industry and public reporting.
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of analysts and specialists fostering high analytical standards intellectual rigour and a culture of continuous learning.

- Skilled at bringing together multiple sources of insight to identify what matters most.
- Confident communicator who can explain complex issues clearly to senior and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborative leader who builds strong working relationships across organisations.
- Motivated by improving the resilience of the UKs energy system through focused evidence-based action.
- Knowledgeable of the GB energy system with relevant engineering energy or policy experience - or a willingness to learn and develop this expertise.
- Proven track record of building and or leading high-performing teams is desirable.
What youll get
A competitive salary between 73000 - 80000pa dependent on experience and capability.
As well as your base salary you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance 28 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
