Position Details:

Performs and interprets analysis on patient specimens through the use of complex laboratory techniques. Provides medical staff with information to aid in patient diagnosis. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission values and Mercy Service Standards.

Safety/Risk Management:
a. Complies with Infection Control guidelines.
b. Adheres to chemical hygiene policies.
c. Follows confidentiality policy/procedure.
d. Adheres to hospital wide and department specific safety regulations.
e. Writes QI reports as necessary.
f. Creates a sage and clean work environment.

Coordination of Services:
a. Orders reagents supplies and instrument consumables in a timely manner to insure continuous service.
b. Coordinates services and resources with laboratory and non-laboratory personnel (i.e. unlabeled/mislabeled specimens supplies).
c. Coordinates completion of training (i.e. blitz new employee POCT).
d. Acts as a resource for laboratory and non-laboratory personnel.
e. Stocks area for next shift and alerts appropriate personnel when reagents or supplies are low.
f. Receives labels and stores supplies accurately and in a timely manner.

Primary Aspects of the Job:
a. Acts as a resource.
b. Researches and develops new procedures.
c. Reviews and revises technical and/or operational procedures.
d. Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting.
e. Performs routine and special tests on biological and environmental materials using automated equipment
or manual methods following established laboratory and testing procedures.
a. Performs tests accurately and cost effectively.
b. Collects and/or assists with collection of patient specimens.
c. Evaluates specimen acceptability.
d. Prepares specimens for transportation to other clinical laboratories for testing.
e. Verifies completion of work requested..
f. Interprets and reports results by observation or calculations.
a. Records results on worksheets or logs calculates test findings required by each test and accurately
reports results.
b. Recognizes critical values and abnormal results and notifies appropriate personnel.
c. Evaluates correlates and interprets the clinical significance of test data.
e. Identifies and insures complete resolution of problems related to test data.
g. Performs quality control and equipment maintenance.
a. Evaluates accuracy of test results and proper functioning of instruments and reagents through the
use of established quality control program.
b. Maintains proper quality control records.
c. Documents corrective action for quality control program.
d. Maintains laboratory instruments by use of preventive maintenance procedures.
e. Performs troubleshooting on equipment and supplies.
h. Creates and utilizes work-aid documents correctly and in a timely manner (i.e. pending logs stype sheets no activity logs etc).
i. Participates in method evaluation and/or research and development.

Communication Management:
a. Handles inquiries regarding procedures test results and their interpretation.
b. Communicates test results appropriately accurately and in a timely manner and documents communication
as required.
c. Remains current with departmental meeting minutes and other required reading.
d. Educates MT/MLT students.
e. Trains co-workers and non-laboratory personnel.

Technology:
a. Reports instrument malfunctions and performs minor repairs.
b. Calls service representative or technical hot-line as necessary.
c. Maintains a working knowledge of laboratory computer functions to insure accurate data management.
d. Maintains a working knowledge of the hospital computer functions to include charges and credits.
e. Maintains a working knowledge of personal computer functions as required (i.e. logging in and out start-upshut-down use of the mouse basic functions selected programs).
f. Attends in-service training on new equipment and procedures (i.e. WinNet).

Education: Bachelors degree

Experience: up to 3 years acceptable clinical laboratory experience as a certified MLS/MT or equivalent or certification eligible new MLS graduate

Certifications: Current certification as MT/MLS or categorical certification through ASCP or equivalent.
