Position Summary

Southwest Florida Proton is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality patient-centered nursing care to adult and pediatric patients within the outpatient Radiation Oncology service line. The RN practices within the scope defined by the Florida Nurse Practice Act and standards established by the Florida Board of Nursing.

The RN serves as a key clinical member of the multidisciplinary Proton Radiation Oncology team by performing patient assessments coordinating care providing education administering treatments and monitoring patient outcomes throughout the course of radiation therapy. This position ensures safe compassionate and evidence-based nursing care while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory accreditation and organizational standards.

This role supports the delivery of consistent high-quality outpatient oncology services while promoting patient safety continuity of care and an exceptional patient experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Nursing Care

  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments for adult and pediatric patients receiving outpatient radiation therapy.
  • Develop implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans based on patient needs and treatment protocols.
  • Administer medications IV therapies and other treatments as ordered by licensed providers in accordance with RN scope of practice.
  • Initiate monitor and maintain peripheral IV therapy and infusion-related care.
  • Monitor patients for radiation therapyrelated side effects including:
    • Skin reactions
    • Fatigue
    • Pain
    • Nausea
    • Nutritional changes
    • Anxiety or emotional distress
  • Provide clinical intervention or escalation when patient conditions change.
  • Accurately document all patient care assessments and communications in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Outpatient Radiation Oncology Care Coordination

  • Coordinate care across the radiation oncology treatment team including physicians therapists dosimetrists physicists and nursing staff.
  • Support daily treatment workflows and patient readiness for radiation therapy appointments.
  • Triage patient concerns symptoms and treatment-related complications.
  • Facilitate referrals follow-up care and interdisciplinary communication as needed.
  • Promote continuity of care throughout the patients course of radiation treatment.

Patient Education & Support

  • Provide comprehensive education to patients and families regarding:
    • Radiation treatment expectations
    • Side effect management
    • Skin care and symptom prevention
    • Nutrition and hydration
    • Activity and fatigue management
  • Support adult and pediatric patients and caregivers through treatment with compassionate developmentally appropriate communication.
  • Reinforce provider instructions and ensure patient understanding of treatment plans.
  • Advocate for patient needs and address questions or concerns.

Quality Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Adhere to infection prevention protocols radiation safety standards HIPAA requirements and outpatient clinical policies.
  • Ensure compliance with state licensure accreditation standards and organizational competencies.
  • Identify and report adverse events patient safety concerns or incidents according to established procedures.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.

Professional Practice & Team Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Radiation Oncologists Advanced Practice Providers Radiation Therapists and clinical support staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings professional development activities and competency assessments.
  • Maintain professional standards consistent with organizational values and ethical nursing practice.

Education & Licensure Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
  • Current Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • BLS/CPR certification required.
  • ACLS certification preferred or obtained within a designated timeframe per facility policy.
  • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred but not required.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical RN experience preferred.
  • Experience in oncology radiation oncology infusion therapy or outpatient specialty clinics strongly preferred.
  • Experience caring for adult and pediatric patients preferred.
  • Ambulatory or outpatient care experience preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of radiation therapy side effects and symptom management.
  • Understanding of outpatient oncology workflows and patient care coordination.
  • Excellent clinical assessment critical thinking and patient education skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients families and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to provide developmentally appropriate care to pediatric patients.
  • Strong documentation and EMR proficiency.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to assist clinic patients with transfers positioning and ambulation.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted and 50 pounds assisted.
  • Ability to stand walk bend and perform repetitive motions during clinic operations.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient Radiation Oncology clinic setting.
  • Exposure to medical equipment and clinical procedures within regulated safety standards.
  • Adherence to infection control radiation safety and workplace safety protocols is required.
