The Chorus Teacher provides engaging instruction in vocal music that develops students musical knowledge performance skills and appreciation for diverse musical traditions. The teacher plans and delivers standards-based instruction that includes music theory vocal technique rehearsal practices and performance preparation.
Through classroom instruction rehearsals and performances the Chorus Teacher fosters creativity collaboration and confidence while supporting students artistic and academic development. The role also includes organizing musical performances and supporting school and community engagement through choral music programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Music Education (vocal or instrumental emphasis) ORBachelors degree and appropriate coursework for licensure as required by the Virginia Department of Education.
Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement(s)
Demonstrated knowledge of vocal music instruction and music education pedagogy
Expertise in the teachers applied major and minor areas of study
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students staff administrators and families
Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming absence ofcontagious tuberculosis
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Learning
Teach music appreciation music theory and vocal performance through general music and choral courses at the assigned grade level.
Develop and implement lesson plans that incorporate vocal technique rehearsal strategies and music literacy skills.
Provide instruction through whole-group small-group and individual learning experiences to address varying skill levels.
Utilize diverse musical repertoire including traditional and contemporary works appropriate to students ages and abilities.
Evaluate student progress in musical growth participation and performance.
Program Development & Performance
Plan rehearse and direct student performances for school and community events.
Organize and manage concerts recitals and other musical presentations.
Promote student participation in music programs and activities.
Classroom & Equipment Management
Establish and maintain a safe organized and productive classroom and rehearsal environment.
Maintain control and proper storage of school-owned musical instruments sheet music and equipment.
Coordinate minor instrument maintenance and repairs with designated vendors.
Maintain inventory records for instruments instructional materials and equipment.
Student Support & Collaboration
Identify student needs and collaborate with colleagues and support staff to support student success.
Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
Cooperate with school administration to support the overall music education program.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain professional competence through district-provided and self-directed professional development activities related to music education.
Participate in faculty meetings committees and school-sponsored activities as assigned.
Supervise students during rehearsals performances and other music-related activities during and outside the regular school day.
Participate cooperatively in the districts evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Work is performed in classrooms rehearsal spaces auditoriums concert venues and occasionally outdoor environments.
Work may involve exposure to higher-than-normal sound levels during rehearsals and performances.
Duties require frequent walking standing bending stooping lifting and movement associated with classroom instruction and performance preparation.
Supervision & Reporting
- The Chorus Teacher reports to the school principal or designee and performs duties in accordance with division policies and instructional guidelines.
