Are you passionate about breaking news enterprise storytelling and data journalism and have a keen interest in uncovering issues that matter to your audience

CBC Ottawa is looking for an experienced dynamic and creative digital journalist who can make a positive contribution to our newsroom and to our audience.

An exceptional journalist and a self-starter you must be able to analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom. You know how to write edit and package digital news and current affairs content. You are comfortable chasing your own stories as well as writing them based on material gathered by your colleagues.

Youre innovative and will try new things new workflows and new story treatments. You understand the diverse and changing population in Ottawa and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content. You appreciate the range of perspectives that people hold and believe in the importance of giving voice to those perspectives.

In this role you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair balanced accurate thoughtful immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

Please note:

This is a permanent full-time position Monday-Friday evenings 3pm - 11:15pm.

Your responsibilities:

  • Pitch source research fact-check and write short and long-form enterprise articles with an understanding of alternative digital storytelling formats that will engage and inform the audience deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.

  • Repurpose content from other CBC platforms including writing packaging stories with strong headlines photos video audio and graphics using the latest information and audience metrics.

  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.

  • Contribute to live updates on the webpage during breaking news.

  • Post and embed video stories on .

  • Copy edit and publish digital content from other writers.

  • Schedule and write copy for social media platforms as well as moderate livestreams.

Your profile:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.

  • Strong understanding of online news including social media and methods of online content distribution.

  • Ability to generate pitch and pursue strong story ideas.

  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Ottawa and surrounding areas and an openness to diverse perspectives and ideas.

  • Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.

  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Attention to detail and strong time management skills.

  • Sound news judgment and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague.

  • A passion for learning new tools and journalism forms -- and an interest in shaping them for the future.

  • Must possess a valid drivers licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance company other classes considered an asset.

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent related experience.

  • A keen interest in data driven journalism.

  • Ability and willingness to work a variety of shifts including early starts late finishes and weekends.
