Duties And Responsibilities
Review consult on and draft as necessary contracts and transactional documents with third parties including but not limited to contracts for the purchase of goods and services information technology equipment and services affiliation agreements and research agreements. Provide legal research analysis and advice on matters pertaining to the Universitys activities and operations. Receive and respond to inquiries from University officers and administrators on legal matters relating to the Universitys activities and operations including regulatory matters non-profit status gifts and bequests and student-related matters and activities. Provide legal analysis on matters related to real property and related administrative requirements. Review consult on and draft as necessary University policies and procedures. Assist and coordinate with the Information Technology department issues of record retention litigation holds IT security and other document management and storage issues. Assist in litigation discovery matters and in providing oversight of external counsel on litigation matters as needed. Be knowledgeable and informed regarding legal developments in higher education law. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school. Demonstrated ability to provide competent legal advice and counsel to the University and its officers administrators and other leaders and departments. Knowledge of and/or ability to effectively research a range of laws and regulations that apply to and govern the Universitys activities and operations. Minimum of 2 years of experience as a practicing and licensed attorney or equivalent. Ability to draft and review contracts and transactional documents. Excellent analytical communication and interpersonal skills required. Excellent planning organization and time management skills including but not limited to the ability to prioritize multiple projects under pressure. Ability to meet deadlines and address client needs on an structured and time-sensitive basis is essential. Ability to navigate a wide range of legal issues in a complex organization. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to competently and effectively evaluate information assess alternatives and provide sound legal advice. Strong computer and information technology skills. The ability to work effectively and professionally under pressure and in time-sensitive situations. The ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality integrity and ethical behavior. Strong commitment to teamwork effective customer service and collaboration. Consistent and regular attendance in compliance with University policies including the ability to conduct work in-person on campus in the Legal Affairs Office. Interest in understanding and supporting John Carrolls mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning leadership and service in the region and in the world. Ability to perform work outside of normal business hours as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
2-4 years of legal experience in higher education non-profit corporate or government legal office or in a civil practice of a law firm. Demonstrated experience in drafting and reviewing contracts and transactional documents strongly preferred. Experience in working at or advising an institution of higher education and/or knowledge of legal issues related to higher education. Some legal experience and/or knowledge of real property/real estate matters and transactions.
