Job Summary

Reporting to the Physician Assistant Program Director the Assistant Professor is a 0.5 FTE 12-month non-tenured faculty position that combines faculty and administrative responsibilities to ensure the efficient operation of the didactic and clinical phases of the Physician Assistant (PA) Program. This position requires the individual to assist in both the didactic and clinical phases of the program to fill the need of either phase.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the recruiting and interviewing of applicants student advising and guidance student remediation course coordination didactic and clinical instruction clinical site development and programmatic assessment. The faculty serving in both the didactic and clinical phases of the program assists the Program Director the Associate Program Director and the Academic and Clinical Coordinators in assuring compliance with programmatic assessment university and program policies and procedures and ARC-PA accreditation standards.

The faculty educates and mentors students to develop the knowledge and skills to meet program defined outcomes and competencies necessary for program completion NCCPA board certification and professional practice as a PA.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Faculty Responsibilities Administrative

  1. Assist in the recruitment of students with the Program Director Program Coordinator and the PA Admissions Committee.
  2. Serve as course coordinator or co-coordinator in both didactic and clinical curriculum courses as determined by the Program Director and completes all required program documents.
  3. Participate and assist with the student interview application and selection process.
  4. Serve as ad hoc member for PA Program committees as requested or designated.
  5. Maintain appropriate student and administrative records.
  6. Assist in developing reviewing and revising as necessary the mission statement goals and competencies of the PA Program.
  7. Assist with the development enhancement and assessment of program
  8. Assist in the recruiting development and maintenance of instructional faculty clinical sites and preceptors as needed and designated by the Program Director.
  9. Assist with the continuous ongoing program analysis of data necessary for self-study accreditation and quality improvement.
  10. Understand and apply ARC-PA standards as they relate to the instruction of curriculum in the PA Program.
  11. Represent the ODU PA Program with professionalism through contacts with faculty students and community health partners.
  12. Participate in local state or national organizations to ensure program excellence and appropriateness of the curriculum and instruction.
  13. Participate in scholarly activities to ensure personal growth.
  14. Attend faculty meetings as scheduled.
  15. Perform other appropriate administrative duties as assigned by the Program Director.
  16. Attend program events including but not limited to OSCEs GAP labs summative testing program retreats orientation White Coat Graduation alumni events etc.

Faculty Responsibilities Student

  1. Assist with student orientation and communications as deemed appropriate throughout the program.
  2. Serve as an academic advisor to designated students throughout their time in the program.
  3. Identify and support student scholarship and professional development as appropriate.
  4. Assist in advising and mentoring of students and development of individualized learning plans and remediation processes utilized throughout the curriculum.
  5. Assist in ongoing tracking of student progress identifies and advises students in regards to strengths and weaknesses makes appropriate recommendations of At Risk students and participates in the PA Progress and Promotion Committee as deemed necessary by the Program Director.
  6. Aid students as necessary in the coordination of professional activities such as resume development interview and other professional activities.
  7. Track and maintain current student files as outlined by the program.
  8. Assist students and graduates with new hire onboarding and references as necessary.
  9. Perform other appropriate student-related duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Faculty Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum

  1. Participates in teaching responsibilities relevant to area of expertise and as assigned throughout the program.
  2. Assist in development and administration of appropriate course assessments summative evaluations and practical exams as appropriate during the didactic phase and assists as needed for students in clinical phase of program.
  3. Participate in the curricular mapping of course and program learning outcomes program competencies NCCPA Content and Task Area Blueprint PA professional competencies and ARC PA standards.
  4. Assist in formulating appropriate curricular modifications based on student and program performance and outcome data.
  5. Complete required documentation and assessment items for written or practical examinations courses faculty program and curricular assessment.
  6. Perform other appropriate instruction and curricular related duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Qualifications Required

  1. If the candidate is a PA they must be a graduate of an accredited PA Program with masters degree or higher in a related discipline.
  2. If the candidate is a PA they possess a minimum of two years of clinical practice as a PA and hold a current or emeritus NCCPA certification as a PA and a current or previous state medical board license.
  3. If the candidate is a physician they must be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Osteopathic or Medical Doctor program.
  4. If the candidate is a physician they possess a minimum of two years of clinical practice experience as a physician and currently or previously licensed osteopathic or allopathic physician and currently or previously board certified.
  5. The candidate must possess terminal degree in area of study or practice.
  6. The candidate must possess exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  7. The candidate must have a collaborative approach to education and clinical medicine.
  8. The candidate must possess excellent verbal written and interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students staff faculty health care professionals and the public.
  9. The candidate must possess proficiency in computer skills and instructional technology.
  10. The candidate must possess sensitivity to the expectations of students staff faculty health care professionals and the public.
  11. The candidate must possess sensitivity to diversity and multi-cultural issues.
  12. The candidate must demonstrate ability to work as a member of a team of highly motivated individuals.
  13. The candidate must possess honesty integrity and commitment to maintaining high professional standards.
