The Department of Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry Division Horticulture Services Nursery and Landscape Section is seekingNursery Aid positions in Honolulu. This position assists with the care cultivation and maintenance of plants shrubs trees and flowers in City nurseries and landscaped areas while supporting plant propagation and general nursery operations.

What You Will Do
  • Care for and cultivate plants shrubs trees and flowers by watering fertilizing trimming pruning transplanting and performing general plant maintenance.
  • Assist with plant propagation by cutting slips potting and re-potting seedlings transplanting plants and preparing planting media.
  • Maintain nursery and surrounding areas by watering weeding mowing raking and keeping facilities and grounds clean and orderly.
  • Prepare planting beds and media mixes dig planting holes install plants apply mulch and assist with irrigation system installation and maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain gardening tools nursery equipment power equipment and light motorized vehicles to transport plants and supplies.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding plant care and nursery activities and assist with general nursery operations as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned for this position.
Special Working Conditions
  • Monday-Friday; 6:30 am - 3:00 pm
  • Handles and uses chemicals and works in areas treated with chemicals
  • May work solely in remote secluded mountainous areas where there is no drinking water restrooms or electricity
  • May be required to work after hours or on weekends to apply pesticides herbicides or respond to special projects events or emergencies
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies

A Nursery Aid may progress up the career ladder and/or qualify for other higher-level positions with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Some experience and/or training in the care and cultivation of plants.

Substitution: Successful completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or similar plant propagation coursework from a regionally-accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience.

Competencies and Skills Needed
  • Knowledge of general horticultural practices and techniques used in the care and cultivation of plants shrubs trees flowers and lawns
  • Knowledge of plant pests and insects
  • Knowledge of the growing characteristics and habits of various plant life
  • Knowledge of the use and care of groundskeeping and gardening tools and equipment
  • Ability to read understand and apply written instructions and guidelines regarding work schedules and assignments safety practices and departmental directives
  • Ability to pot and re-pot plants and do basic propagation work
  • Ability to learn the names of and identify common plants and trees
  • Ability to use common garden tools and equipment
LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
At the time of application:
  1. Valid drivers license (Type 3/automobile)
Prior to appointment (part of pre-employment medical exam):
  1. Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
  2. Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test
Prior to completion of probation:
  1. First Aid/CPR/AED certificates
  2. Forklift Certification (Class C: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks-Pneumatic Tires)
Any required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above and maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.
