Senior Media Librarian Indigenous Languages Archives Project - 1 year with possibility of extension


The Indigenous Languages Archives (ILA) curates digitises and catalogues (using a decolonizing and Indigenizing approach) CBCs Indigenous language archived radio programs to make them searchable discoverable and accessible. CBC North is seeking a Senior Media Librarian to facilitate this work.


Reporting to the Manager Indigenous languages Archive and working under the supervision of the Project Lead you will be responsible for overseeing the work of a team of cataloguers ensuring established workflows and standards are adhered to liaise with various technical teams to implement and operationalise metadata schemas in the media asset management system - and as such make the content searchable and accessible and provide continued training and support to the team. Work is governed by CBC programming and journalistic policies as well as various agreements governing the possible use of these materials. Advice and guidance are available but there is latitude for and an expectation of independent judgement. Work usually involves the coordination of the activities of others.


Some key tasks include:


  • Support the Project Lead in implementing best practices with respect to physical assets media assets and metadata management.

  • Working in CBCs media asset management system you will ensure the integrity of catalogued records.

  • Ensure materials are catalogued to established standards with specific reference to metadata maintaining an Indigenizing perspective.

  • Assigns co-ordinates and trains the cataloguing team.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of CBCs media asset management system.

  • Update asset and workflow tracking documents as required.

  • Work with the Project Lead to track the progress of the Project.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders in technology solutions and support to ensure best practices in the management of digital and digitised files.

  • Ensure unique identifiers are applied to all digitised files.

  • Carry out records validation and report issues to the Project Lead.

  • Responsible for maintaining and updating guidelines/standards workflow and user training documentation.


We are looking for a candidate with the following:


  • Strong bilingual communication in Inuktitut and Englishwith an emphasis on written English and spoken/comprehensive Inuktitut.

  • Knowledge of metadata standards subject analysis and controlled vocabularies.

  • Familiarity or experience or knowledge of/with non-western metadata schemas.

  • Knowledge of or experience cataloguing digital collections.

  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada programming policies and journalistic standards and practices an asset.

  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada programming is an asset.

  • Familiarity with or ability to learn CBC internal systems.

  • Understanding of file-based workflows systems and tools is an asset.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Ability to work without supervision.

  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team environment.

  • Highly organised and detail-oriented.

  • Self-motivated and self-sufficient.

  • Four years of comparable and relevant experience.

  • Graduate degree from an accredited library school or equivalent education and experience.

  • A Masters degree in Library Science is considered an asset.
