Mission

The Mission of Valley Life Charter School is to provide a rigorous educational program emphasizing academics leadership and visual and performing arts. VLCS will provide authentic opportunities for students to apply the academics leadership principles and life skills taught for making good decisions. Students will encounter research-based academics along with leadership opportunities in the classroom in the school and in the community.

Leadership and character building are vital to the instructional philosophy at VLCS. To create an environment in which students feel respected and are willing to take risks VLCS instructional philosophy is to create a school in which students are well-mannered leaders with exceptional listening skills and the ability to follow the rules. Character development and leadership-building strategies will enhance the learning environment by allowing both the student and teacher to focus on the curriculum. This approach will be used to create a positive atmosphere and allow students to focus on educational goals and develop the skills and self-confidence to succeed as leaders in the 21st Century.

Job Summary:
The job of Speech & Language Pathologist is done for the purpose/s of identifying evaluating and implementing speech and language services for students with speech and language impairments; implements assessment procedures and annual standard tests necessary for thorough and accurate diagnosis; conveys pertinent student information to appropriate staff; works collaboratively with staff parents and outside agencies.

Essential Functions:
Conducts screenings and evaluations to meet California state eligibility guidelines;
Attends to student speech referrals according to established timelines;
Provides assessments and written reports for the purpose of identifying and reporting speech language needs;
Establish goals and identify intervention/instructional methods for each area of student need;
Develops and implements Individualized Education Plans (IEPs);
Provide a variety of service delivery models including push-in pull-out individual and group;
Collaborates with parents teachers private providers and other specialists for the purpose of assessing planning implementing and evaluating students needs interventions and progress monitoring;
Serves as a productive member of the IEP team;
Provides a full continuum of speech language services for students who qualify;
Works collaboratively with staff parents and outside agencies to ensure students needs are adequately met;
Communicates with parents teachers private providers counselors and other specialists for the purpose of providing optimal intervention/instructional strategies and generalization across environments;
Maintain organized documentation and records in accordance with local state and federal policies and guidelines;
Serves as case manager for assigned students:
May provide supervision to Speech Language Pathologist Assistants (SLPA) interns and instructional aides;

Responsibilities:
Working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods and providing information and/or advising others. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the jobs functions. There is some opportunity to impact the Organizations services. The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; some stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting 20% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations.

Skills:
Utilize evidence based best practices for addressing speech-language and communication disorders;
Utilize results of current resources to improve program;
Communicate effectively orally and in writing;;
Appropriate use of English word usage spelling grammar syntax and punctuation;
Operate a computer and utilize a variety of applicable programs;

Knowledge of:
Speech language and hearing delays and disorders;
Best practices for motor speech disorders phonological disorders and language disorders including receptive expressive and pragmatics;
Best practice for using appropriate evaluation tools for assessment and diagnosis of speech and language communication delays and disorders;
Augmentative and Alternative (AAC) communication systems including both low and high technology;
California Content Standards;
IEP process and procedures;

Ability to:
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with parents and other professionals;
Drive personal vehicle for travel to various locations throughout the county;
Apply methods and procedures for effective caseload management;

Education Required:
Bachelors degree required;
Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology OR proof of acceptance in an ASHA accredited speech & language program OR eligible for a speech language waiver;
Valid California Credential authorizing service as a speech and language specialist;

Other Requirements:
Valid California drivers license and proof of automobile insurance;
Department of Justice and FBI Fingerprint Response (upon hire);
Must possess an automobile for travel on the job;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • First aid and CPR certified by the first day of employment
  • Valid TB Clearance by the first day of employment
  • Clear Criminal Background/Fingerprint Clearance
  • Maintain acceptable standards of physical health energy and emotional adjustment to the job environment.
  • Computer skills- proficiency in Word Excel and others as necessary
  • Experience in SEIS preferred
