We are seeking a visionary leader to serve as Program Chief of the Holland Bone and Joint Program a nationally recognized centre spanning Orthopaedic Surgery Spine Surgery and Rheumatology within Canadas largest trauma hospital.

This is a five-year term appointment renewable once following successful review. The anticipated start date is July 1 2026 or as mutually agreed. If the successful candidate is an orthopedic surgeon then the candidate will also take on the role of Division Head of Orthopedic Surgery at SHSC.

About the Role

The Chief will provide academic clinical and operational leadership aligned with Sunnybrooks bold strategic direction Invent the Future of Health Care. As part of Sunnybrooks Invent 2030 strategy the Chief will play a central role in advancing equitable system-connected musculoskeletal care across Ontario and beyond.

This is a rare opportunity to:

• Lead one of Canadas most comprehensive and largest musculoskeletal programs
• Shape next-generation models of integrated surgical and medical care
• Accelerate embedded research in partnership with the Sunnybrook Research Institute
• Drive innovation in advanced therapeutics surgical technologies and quality improvement
• Mentor the next generation of clinicians scientists and educators

Working in a dyad leadership model with the Operations Director of the Program and reporting to the Executive Vice President the Chief will:

• Drive strategic growth aligned with Sunnybrooks institutional priorities
• Advance high-quality innovative and patient-centred care
• Advance interdisciplinary and system-level integration of bone and joint care within and beyond the organization
• Strengthen global research partnerships and knowledge translation
• Lead integration of emerging technologies and models of care

• Foster a culture of mentorship inclusiveness and academic excellence

• Provide academic oversight across all divisions
• Expand bone and joint research
• Support excellence in undergraduate postgraduate fellowship continuing medical and patient education
• Ensure operational effectiveness and accountability

• Advance an integrated patient-centred model of musculoskeletal care
• Drive innovation in surgical technologies digital health and new models of service delivery
• Strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration across divisions and institutional programs
• Expand translational and outcomes-focused research
• Mentor and inspire the next generation of clinician-scientists and educators
• Foster partnerships across hospitals community providers and regional systems
• Champion philanthropy in collaboration with the Sunnybrook Foundation to accelerate Program ambitions
• If the successful candidate is an orthopedic surgeon they will also hold the Division Head of Orthopedic Surgery role and report to the Surgeon in Chief

The Chief will work closely with the Sunnybrook Foundation to help establish philanthropic priorities aligned with strategic goals foster a culture of gratitude within the Program and actively support fundraising initiatives that advance innovation in bone and joint care.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is collaborative forward-thinking and energized by system-level impact a leader with vision for innovation who can unite excellence in care with discovery education and community partnership.

The successful candidate will be a transformational academic leader with:

• An MD and certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent)
• Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto
• Outstanding interpersonal and leadership capabilities
• A distinguished record of peer-reviewed research and academic scholarship
• Demonstrated success in mentoring faculty and trainees at all career stages
• Experience in undergraduate postgraduate fellowship continuing medical education or patient education leadership
• An internationally recognized record of leadership in academic program development and service innovation

• Commitment to collaboration across hospitals and community partners
• A deep commitment to equity diversity inclusion and culturally responsive care

• Experience working with diverse populations and building inclusive environments
