Description of Work

NCDOT is looking for a highly motivated individual looking for a position with the potential of career advancement. This position will provide all state benefits including paid vacation and sick leave health insurance and retirement.

This position is located in the Mecklenburg County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities operating a variety of hand and power tools clearing right of way repairing pavements assisting with pipe installation and other drainage tasks inventorying materials other assigned tasks; and the operation of heavy equipment. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Duties of this position include but are not limited to shoveling raking asphalt flagging traffic ditching and scrubbing. This position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances. The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions are required. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions extreme heat noise vibration hazards and oils. Visual acuity is required. Safety toe shoes are required. A Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Must be able to obtain/ maintain a valid inmate card. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check complete necessary training and orientation and be at least 21 years of age.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC..00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation or asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: asphalt distributor asphalt patcher backhoe crack sealing machine force feed loader forklift front end loader motor grader skid steer sweeper tandem dump truck or track excavator

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
