The Global Mining team is a leading provider of investment banking services to existing and prospective metals & mining companies globally. The teams coverage strategy spans North America Europe Latin America Asia and Australia. Our client-centric approach incorporates M&A and other financial advisory services with access to the debt equity and loan capital markets as well as complex risk and hedging solutions. The Global Mining team manages a market leading platform from our offices in Toronto Vancouver London Sydney Hong Kong Tokyo and Bogota.
Clients across the world turn to CIBCs Global Mining team for M&A advisory debt and equity financing and lending products. We have led many of the industrys largest gold and base metals equity transactions and have played integral lead strategic advisory roles to global mining companies in some of the largest industry defining merger and acquisition transactions. Our specialized global platform and subject matter expertise enables us to help our clients meet their goals including those related to the global energy transition.
With guidance from Executive Director you will complete assignments that impact the firms bottom line through transaction and financing execution client relationship support industry and company research and contributing to the overall communication flow across our global offices. The role provides you with steep learning and an ability to observe and influence the strategic direction of our clients businesses with exposure to company executives and board of directors.
Associates on the Global Mining teamwill be expected to provide a broad range of analytical research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within their group and play a critical role in mentoring and training Analysts on the team. Typically Associates are assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects such as mergers & acquisitions divestitures equity and debt financings and capital structure and strategic advisory projects and must have strong prioritization and multi-tasking capabilities. You will also be expected to maintain an awareness of our clients industry regulatory issues and relevant
economic/political trends. Applying your strengths in quantitative analysis to create and direct complex financial analysis and models while extracting the big picture implications of such analysis will be critical to your success.
The role of an Associate is challenging and fast-paced. It requires dedication passion for the industry and a very solid work ethic. You must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete work assignments.
How youll succeed
Research - Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities
Proposal - Play a key role in the preparation of client proposals pitchbooksand the execution of new and existing client mandates including overseeing Analyst work. Prepare industry and financial analysis to assist with the development of client recommendations
Financial Modelling Develop and audit sophisticated financial models
Analysis - Lead industry comparable value and transaction precedent analyses
Due Diligence - Assist in company due diligence investigations
Support - Support senior investment banking colleagues and directing and training analyst teammates
Relationship Building Grow your internal and external networks coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused brainstorming sessions with relevant team members and product specialists. Developing relationships and actively communicating with various appropriate contacts at our clients. Developing and maintaining an internal network with product groups and other business groups. Developing and maintaining an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders clients prospects etc.). Liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients

Mentoring - Actively managing and mentoring the Analyst that work with you and providing regular feedback to them

You have an undergraduate degree in finance accounting mathematics engineering computer science or economics. Completion of a CA CFA MBA or Masters in Finance is an asset
You can demonstrate relevant industry experience. A minimum of 2 years of previous experience in one or more of investment banking corporate finance private equity project financing tax equity or investment review. Experience must have included meaningful financial modeling and analysis. Direct work experience in the mining industry is an asset
You have relevant financial skills. Excellent analytical ability including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices including cash flow and returns analyses. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations
You possess technical skills (Programs Methodologies Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel Word PowerPoint) industry technology (FactSet Bloomberg) and other applicable software
You are motivated by collective success Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop manage and leverage relationships with clients and internal and/or external business partners. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues.
