Job Summary

SECONDMENT - 2026/2027 School Year

POSITION: Special Education Resource Teachers - Blind and Low Vision

FTE: 1.0

LOCATIONS: TBD (support is provided across the UCDSB)

NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 2

SUMMARY:

To work with schools to implement and support programmingand instructional practices to meet the needs of visually impaired or blind students in inclusionary classroom settings. To build school staff capacity in the delivery of direct services as required by visually impaired or blind students.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Build staff capacity to deliver student specific approaches for visually impaired and blind students

Work directly in classrooms to build staff and student capacity to facilitate success for visually impaired and blind students

Work as a member of the regional team to enable system implementation of board initiatives

Assessment of students to determine alternative programming

Provide in-service to teachers parents and peers of exceptional students regarding program modifications use of assistive technology teaching strategies and equipment needs

Work with the Superintendent and System Principals of Teaching and Learning to facilitate system direction

Participate as required in assisting school staff in IEP development and reports for IPRC meetings

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the use of assistive technology with emphasis on technology specific to visually impaired and blind students

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in working with students with a wide range of exceptionalities

Knowledge of Alphabetic and Contracted Braille

Demonstrates a learning mindset

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the Ontario curriculum

Excellent organization presentation and time management skills

Exemplary interpersonal and team building skills

Experience in integrating technology into teaching practice initiatives

Familiar with a wide range of assessment tools communication strategies and safety strategies and requirements

Knowledge of instructional strategies and formats to engage students and inform teaching practice (differentiated instruction universal design for learning assessment and evaluation)

Professional demonstration of Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession

Understands professional development and its impact on student learning

Demonstrates knowledge of equitable and inclusive education practices and has an understanding of culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy

Effectively communicate and work with school staff community resources and Psychological Service

QUALIFICATIONS:

An Ontario Teachers Certificate of Qualification

Minimum Part One - Additional Qualification -Teacher of the Blind (additional qualifications in the Area of Deaf and Hard of Hearing education would be considered an asset)

Experience in teaching students of low vision is preferred

Qualifications in Elementary and/or Secondary

Minimum of 5 years of experience in teaching (Special Education preferred)

Member of the Ontario College of Teachers in good standing

Conditions:

Salary grid plus travel allowance

Term one school year 2026/2027 (at the end of the term returns to home school where applicable)

Travel to various locations may be required
