Elementary Adjustment Counselor

Position Overview
The Elementary Adjustment Counselor supports the social-emotional development and early school adjustment of students in kindergarten through second grade. This role provides counseling services to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) who require social-emotional support while also serving as the primary Tier 1 counseling support for all students.

The Adjustment Counselor works closely with teachers the Counseling Department and the Special Education team to help young students develop foundational skills in emotional regulation peer relationships problem-solving and school engagement. This role also supports teachers through classroom consultation and helps ensure that early interventions promote long-term student success.

This position is central to creating a school environment where young students feel safe supported and ready to learn and where social-emotional learning is integrated into the early academic experience.

Key Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities assigned at Director discretion.

Student Counseling and Support

  • Provide individual and small group counseling services to students whose IEPs include counseling or social-emotional support.
  • Support students experiencing adjustment challenges related to school routines peer relationships emotional regulation or behavioral development.
  • Develop & write counseling goals implement goals collect data on progress attend and present at IEP Team meetings
  • Help students build early skills in emotional awareness self-regulation problem-solving and positive peer interactions.

Tier 1 Social-Emotional Support

  • Serve as the primary counseling support for Tier 1 social-emotional learning for students.
  • Collaborate with teachers to reinforce school-wide SEL practices that support belonging respect and positive behavior.
  • Assist in implementing developmentally appropriate strategies that help students successfully adjust to the school environment.

Classroom Consultation and Collaboration

  • Provide consultation to classroom teachers on strategies to support students social-emotional development and classroom engagement.
  • Partner with teachers to address emerging behavioral or adjustment concerns early.
  • Collaborate with the Counseling Department Special Education staff and school leadership to support student needs.

Family and School Communication

  • Communicate with families regarding student social-emotional progress and support strategies when appropriate.
  • Participate in IEP and SST meetings and contribute to the development of appropriate supports and interventions.

School Community Support

  • Help foster a positive early learning environment where students feel seen heard and valued.
  • Support and lead school-wide efforts that promote belonging positive behavior and strong relationships among students and staff.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in School Counseling Social Work Mental Health Counseling School Adjustment Counseling or related field.
  • Massachusetts licensure as a School Adjustment Counselor School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor or equivalent.
  • Experience working with young children in a school setting preferred.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
