job Description for a veterinary assistant
Summary:
The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing care for animals. This role involves assisting in medical procedures maintaining a clean and safe environment and enhancing the overall experience for clients and their pets.
Responsibilities:
- Assist veterinarians during examinations and medical procedures.
- Prepare animals and equipment for surgery and other procedures.
- Administer medications and vaccinations as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the clinic including sterilization of instruments.
- Provide general care and feeding for animals in the clinic.
- Record keeping and updating of patients medical files.
- Educate clients on basic pet care and post-treatment care instructions.
- Assist in handling and restraining animals safely and humanely.
Required Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a veterinary or animal care setting is preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle animals safely and compassionately.
- Basic understanding of animal behavior and medical terminology.
- Physical stamina to lift and restrain pets of various sizes.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely.
- Certification as a Veterinary Assistant (preferred but not required).
