About the Faculty of Business Communication Studies and Aviation

The Faculty of Business Communication Studies and Aviation has approximately 4000 students and includes the EFMD accredited Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies.

The Bissett School of Business offers a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with majors in General Management Human Resources Management Accounting Finance International Business Supply Chain Management and Marketing. Aviation is also part of the Bissett School of Business. The Aviation programs include a Bachelor of Aviation Management (BAM) an Aviation Diploma and a flight school at our Springbank Aviation Campus.

About the School of Communication Studies

The SCS is a vibrant school offering a Bachelor of Communication Studies with 4 majors including Broadcast Media Studies Information Design Journalism and Digital Media and Public addition to the degrees and majors offered in the Faculty students may take a variety of minors concentrations and certificates to complement their major.

About the Role

The School of Communication Studies at Mount Royal University invites applications for a tenure-track position which will commence July 1 2026 subject to final budgetary approval at the Rank of Assistant Professor.

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/ scholarship/ service pattern (TSS) focuses on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/ service pattern (TS) focuses on teaching and service only. The successful candidate for this role will be hired into the teaching/ service pattern (TS). There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.

We are seeking a versatile scholar-practitioner who can contribute their expertise across the Bachelor of Communication Studies (BCMM) degree by teaching the technical and ethical aspects of capturing high-impact evidence-based visual narratives with an emphasis on photojournalism. The successful candidate will help develop curricular elements that support a fundamental commitment to information integrity in visual storytelling.

Qualifications

  • A Masters degree in Journalism Communication Studies or a related field is required - PHD an asset
  • Advanced proficiency in photojournalism and professional photography including photo editing.
  • Experience creating evidence-based video including videography and editing in a professional setting.
  • Evidence of (or potential for) high-quality university-level instruction and a student-centered approach to learning.
  • Exceptional interpersonal presentation and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to pedagogy that fosters equity inclusion and decolonization.
  • Experience with curriculum development is an asset.

Teaching allocations may include:

  • Photography and photojournalism
  • Editing and layout
  • Visual storytelling
  • Introductory to advanced news reporting and other journalism courses that may include topics such as reporting data visualization and digital storytelling
  • Courses that may include the study of communication and culture communication theories media history and media futures
  • Course redesign new course development and teaching within the Bachelor of Communication Studies degree

Responsibilities

  • Instruction: prepare materials for course delivery including course outlines resources readings activities lessons assessments and learning management systems; support and respond to students outside of scheduled class time; deliver assigned courses; and
  • Course Administration: administer final exams input final grades upon course completion and participate in course-related meetings as required; and
  • Curriculum Integration: Develop and refine course content that serves the distinct needs of the BCMM degree; and
  • Service: contribute to the governance and academic life of the School Faculty and University; and
  • Community: At Mount Royal University our community connections are an important and integral part of our programs. The successful candidate may be required to engage with community partners and/or professional associations on behalf of the School.
