Job Summary

General Purpose

As an intern you will gain hands-on knowledge around community/parks planning placemaking urban design and social communication. You will work in Burlington supporting projects by being a park ambassador and actively engaging in outreach and communication with the public. The position start date is flexible and will go through the summer depending on funding.

  • Gain practical experience in community outreach.
  • Understand the impact of Park Recreation and Waterfront infrastructure and services on the community and how the agency operates in a municipal government setting.
  • Understand and appreciate duties and responsibilities of BPRW personnel.
  • Become involved in activities that will develop professional skills and foster professionalism.
  • Develop a personal philosophy of park design and engagement efforts.
  • Determine professional strengths and areas in which to grow/improve.
  • Develop an understanding of municipal organization and administrative procedure.

Union Affiliation: Non-Union
Pay Grade: $19.90 Hourly
Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist in telling the story of BPRW project work through written and graphic communication developed for social media website press releases photographic logs etc.
  • Be available nights/weekends as needed to support the work of the planning team and larger BPRW team during the busy and active summer months with some event specific availability required
  • Strategize with the parks planning team and BPRW leadership team on outreach strategies and existing community connections.
  • Attend relevant community events and meetings to network and discuss active park planning efforts (where appropriate).
  • Support the creation of outreach materials.
  • Help draft communication content.
  • Identify community groups and members that represent Burlingtons diverse population and connect with them about active projects.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Desire to learn curiosity to ask lots of questions and be open to opinions different than ones own.
  • Have or are willing to obtain the Department of Liquor Controls 1st Class Server Certification (testing fee paid by BPRW for one year certification)
  • Have access to reliable transportation for both office and event hours; a valid drivers license.
