Job Summary

Purpose of Position

The mission of the College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines (CNPD) is to provide excellent and collaborative education scholarship and service to advance human well-being for all with an emphasis on rural and underserved populations.

The CNPD is comprised of the departments of Nursing Nutrition & Dietetics and Social Work. The Social Work department is seeking an academic advisor who will serve as the primary academic advisor for pre-social work and social work students. This individual will also assist the BSSW program with recruitment and retention related activities including recruiting of prospective students and screening students for admission to the BSSW program. Additional responsibilities include assisting with CSWE accreditation and assessment as they relate to the advising process.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • 50% - Provide Academic Advisement to Undergraduate & Prospective Social Work Students
    • Provide academic and professional advisement to all pre-social work and social work students through regular communications and meetings
    • Develop academic plans for undergraduate students and monitor progress towards readiness for field practicum and graduation
    • Assist students with course registration override procedures financial aid and other university processes
    • Address possible barriers to academic success and connect students with campus resources and services
    • Inform students of the BSSW program application process answer questions and provide feedback on application drafts as needed
    • Collect prepare and assist with screening of BSSW program applications and facilitate the BSSW committee admissions review process
    • Notify applicants of admissions decisions and meet to answer questions and provide guidance on next steps
  • 20% - Collaborate with Faculty Around Advisement & Curriculum Development
    • Assist with CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) reaffirmation self-study preparation for the BSSW program as it relates to advising and admitting students
    • Review and update BSSW advising information in department materials program manuals the UND Academic Catalog and the BSSW program website
    • Serve on the BSSW Committee in an advisory capacity providing curricular advisement and supporting admissions process
    • Serve as liaison to the CNPD core advisor and the Office of Student Academic Success to ensure the Social Work department stays up to date on university advising policies and processes
  • 20% - Assist with the Recruitment & Retention of Undergraduate Social Work Students
    • Respond to prospective student inquiries and meet with prospective students and families
    • Represent the social work department at recruitment events
    • Assist in the development and disbursement of recruitment materials
    • Represent the social work departments mission and goals when performing job duties in the broader community
    • Assist students in developing feasible degree plans and provide necessary support to execute them
    • Answer inquiries requesting information about UND CNPD and the RAIN program
    • Work with the BSSW program director and the BSSW committee to brainstorm and coordinate student programming opportunities (new student orientation social work month celebrations etc)
    • Work with the BSSW program director and the BSSW committee to assess the BSSW programs implicit curriculum and utilize data collected as it relates to student advising recruitment and retention
  • 10% - Provide Information (oral & written) to Faculty & Stakeholders
    • Participate in meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
    • Assist in preparation of written reports to faculty stakeholders and CSWE
    • Assist with the maintenance of a social work student database

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in social work from a CSWE accredited program
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in social work from a CSWE accredited program
  • Two years of full time post degree social work practice experience
  • Experience with social work curriculum and/or CSWE accreditation
  • Experience advising in higher education
  • Experience working with database platforms
  • Experience with collecting and analyzing data
