Job Summary

Work Schedule: 8.00 hours per day ( 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) -260 days per year (Monday - Friday)

Job Summary:

This position will assist in recruiting new driver candidates and conducting training for potential new drivers; ensuring training is completed according to Federal State and district requirements; conducting required driver in-service training; retraining of existing drivers; training student safety program; and training transportation para professionals. Early morning opening/late evening closing of the office and dispatch may be part of the Driver Trainers duties as well as transporting students in emergency situations or when there are insufficient drivers to cover routes. The Driver Trainer will be required to assist with check rides and accident investigations as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License with required Commercial Drivers License for a minimum of 2 years School bus requirements: Class B School Bus & Passenger endorsements with air brake restriction removed
  • Washington State OSPI School Bus Driver Authorization
  • Washington State OSPI Certified School Bus Driver Instructor - Certificate at time of application
  • Minimum of 2 years training experience both classroom and behind the wheel training
  • Valid 1st Aid/CPR card
  • Valid Medical Examiner Certificate
  • Completion of CWU Pupil Transportation Management Training Program preferred
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • Completion of all district-required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date

Essential Job Functions:

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

    • Recruit screen interview and perform pre-employment telephone reference checks on potential bus driver candidates
    • Instruct the driver training course as required by Superintendent of Public Instruction State & Federal requirements and district policy and procedures
    • Professionally interact with students staff and public
    • Assist potential drivers in obtaining certifications required to driver a school bus
    • Monitor and evaluate new drivers progress throughout the basic training course
    • Perform on-road observations (check rides) of all drivers and para professionals and provide appropriate verbal and written feedback
    • Coordinate emergency exit drills with schools and drivers throughout the year in accordance to WAC
    • Maintain legible and accurate training records
    • Update 1799 report on Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction electronic report
    • Instruct Type II training for authorizing teachers and coaches according to district guidelines
    • Instruct annual in-service training department training school bus safety programs transportation para professional training and motor pool driver training
    • Assure that an adequate number of authorized drivers is maintained so that all routes and trips can be accommodated
    • Assist supervisor with investigations of collisions involving district vehicles as needed and provide post collision re-training recommendations
    • Coordinate with community events to assist with driver recruitment and school bus safety programs
    • Attend safety meetings and participate on transportation committees as needed
    • Assist with STARS ridership report for funding and update walk boundaries
    • Maintain updated knowledge of school policies and procedures that affect this position

  • Open early in the morning or close late evening for dispatch office as needed

    • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours
    • Professionally interact with students staff and public

  • Comply with all district policies and procedures

  • Perform related duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of student transportation regulations driving laws district policy and procedures
  • Knowledge and use of 2-way radio system

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee will be working independently in a classroom environment as well as outdoors in all types of inclement weather and must be prepared to perform any added duties because of this. Employee will have to be alert and aware of all safety factors. Necessary tasks may include but are not limited to pushing pulling bending lifting squatting climbing and jumping and required to have precise control of fingers foot and hand movements. Environment is a fast paced with constant interruptions; required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and may be exposed to diesel gas coolant oil grease and high engine temperatures. Evaluation:

This position shall be evaluated periodically by the Director of Transportation pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the performance of the above essential job functions.
