Changing the travel behaviour of individuals and persuading people to choose walking cycling wheeling or public transport instead of driving to work or taking children to school by car is difficult. This is however essential if we are to support future growth tackle traffic congestion in Suffolks larger towns and reduce the health and climate change impacts of personal travel.

Your role and responsibilities

Working with key individuals and groups throughout your area you will lead and manage the cycling and walking instructor team and coordinate volunteers within community hubs.

Youll support the Communities Active Travel Manager with the launch of community hubs delivery of services and Active Travel team strategic direction.

Collaboration with the Project Officer will be important to ensure effective and timely administration of the programme supporting their work during peak period.

You will contribute to the Active Travel Communication Strategy which may include regular promotional activities by attending events and contributing to websites and social media.

You will need

  • To be a confident communicator who can convey both simple and complex information to a wide range of audiences both internally and externally.
  • To be confident leading a team that aims to empower individuals to become healthier and travel safely and sustainably.

  • Ability to build relationships outside of the Transport Strategy team to help deliver team objectives.
  • Good listening skills to ideas from colleagues and are able take on new concepts and information and adopt new approaches.

  • A good working knowledge of transport legislation local & national strategy technical and political policies and national standards in cycling.
  • Experience in the use Microsoft Office applications (and other software if required) to effectively manage your time and your projects and ensure that your team are organised and work efficiently.

The team

The Active Travel team work cohesively towards a common goal of improving the skills independence health and wellbeing of Suffolk residents.

Our team works with external and internal partners across Suffolk County Council including Public Health. We are a supportive lively and proactive team which is pragmatic and solutions focussed.

The teams work in a range of settings within the community including hubs schools colleges workplaces and housing estates which support people to travel safely and sustainably.

We practice hybrid working but are often on-site delivering services and events at various community hubs and partner organisations.
