Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students in a unique residential setting.Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.
Description of Work
This position is located at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. This is journeyman-level work in the construction installation maintenance troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems equipment and fixtures throughout school facilities. Work assignments are received from a foreman or other supervisor and are performed independently in accordance with accepted trade practices and applicable electrical codes. New or unusual work orders are typically accompanied by sketches blueprints or detailed instructions.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Work is reviewed through inspection of completed assignments for quality safety and compliance with work orders. Performance is further evaluated based on the continued functionality efficiency and reliability of electrical systems and equipment repaired or installed. The position requires attention to safety protocols and adherence to regulatory standards to ensure safe operation within academic residential and administrative environments.
This role also requires knowledge of school facility operations to ensure electrical systems effectively support classrooms residential areas administrative spaces and specialized instructional addition the position may coordinate with other maintenance staff and contractors to ensure projects are completed efficiently safely and with minimal disruption to school operations.

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade.
Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
Ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment.
Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches.
Ability to train apprentices in the electrical trade.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Knowledge of electrical systems and safety requirements specific to educational or institutional facilities.
Ability to coordinate work with other trades and departments to ensure school operations are not disrupted.
Ability to interpret and apply electrical codes safety regulations and industry standards in the performance of assigned duties.
Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical systems and implement effective corrective actions in a timely manner.
Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in the construction or repair of secondary electrical systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Based on the nature of work performed may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
