Are you a skilled law enforcement professional with a talent for teaching and a commitment to safety The City of Edmonton is seeking a Community Standards Training Instructor to join our Logistics and Business Services this role you will be a key driver in shaping the skills and expertise of our Community Standards branch ensuring our staff are equipped with the latest tactical and operational knowledge. You will work in a dynamic law enforcement environment collaborating with various municipal and provincial agencies to deliver high-quality training that meets strict legislative standards. Reporting to the Community Standards Training Program Coordinator you will be responsible for the development and delivery of operational and tactical training for the branch. You will play a vital role in ensuring that enforcement officers and staff meet all necessary programs legislative requirements and authorities. Your daily activities will include researching best practices performing needs assessments and delivering comprehensive branch curriculums. You will also manage training databases to ensure all personnel are current with their certifications and refreshers. This position is central to aligning our training with corporate culture improvements and provincially mandated requirements.

What will you do

  • Provide consistent and standardized instruction to all branch staff
  • Assist in delivering the Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) and all peace officer-related certifications and refreshers
  • Conduct research and environmental scans on the latest enforcement methodologies investigative practices and personal protective tactics
  • Perform ongoing coaching and support to resolve complex issues and maintain staff morale
  • Monitor accident reports and safety records to identify trends and proactively determine training requirements
  • Participate in recruitment efforts by presenting at job fairs and post-secondary institutions
  • Providing support to the Training Coordinator in designing and producing comprehensive learning materials and instructional strategies across various media (print video multimedia) to ensure alignment with corporate goals and legislative requirements for the delivery of training
  • Provides standardized instruction and field training to all branch staff specifically leading the Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) certifications and training safety refreshers
  • Conducts environmental scans and research on enforcement methodologies technological advances and protective tactics to keep the delivery of training programs current and effective
  • Builds relationships with leadership and external partners (like the EPS and Government of Alberta) to plan schedules coordinate logistics and ensure adherence to provincial enforcement standards
  • Sets learning and performance objectives and conducts formal assessments/safety tests to ensure staff are qualified to perform peace officer duties and operate tools and equipment
  • Tracks training progress and analyzes accident/safety records to identify trends proactively adjusting training programs to mitigate risks and address skill gaps
  • Manages end-to-end training logisticsincluding facility booking record-keeping and reportingwhile providing ongoing coaching and performance appraisals for staff
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completion of diploma in Police Studies Criminology or related field with Adult Education courses
  • Minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience
  • One (1) year of experience delivering training specifically within a law enforcement environment
  • Formal training education and experience instructing using adult learning principles
  • Current related instructor or Public Safety and Emergency Services Academy qualifications
  • Post-secondary coursework in adult instruction

Assets:

  • Business-related courses in leadership coaching and staff development
  • Experience contributing to workplace culture through special projects and initiatives
  • Technically sound skills in the Google Suite of products

Skills required for success:

  • Ability to instruct train and mentor adults effectively in diverse educational settings
  • Extensive knowledge of educational principles facilitation techniques and curriculum design
  • Strong understanding of Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) and environmental legislation
  • Proven ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks based on business needs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) for interacting with various collaborators
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is a requirement
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Completion of a pre-employment Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation (PARE) satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Obtain and retain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I Designation and associated peace officer certifications
  • Obtain and retain bylaw enforcement officer status
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • Availability to work during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time
  • This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust chemicals and mechanical/electrical hazards may occur
  • Requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing walking kneeling bending and lifting items up to 100 lbs
  • Public-facing role requiring interaction with diverse people which could include confrontational situations and aggression
