We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Secondary School team. St. Francis School provides a faith-based Roman Catholic education within the public school system of Yukon Education. Our school sits on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Taan Kwächän Council within the wilderness city of Whitehorse Yukon. SFACS is a 8-12 school of approximately 460 students serving a diverse cultural population. Our educational professionals facilitate academic excellence and model life-long learning. We assist students in developing a relationship with Jesus and appreciation of self and others. The uniqueness of each child is celebrated.

This 0.857 FTE temporary position is a teaching position in addition to providing support and as a Learning Assistant Teacher for individual students or small groups of students who have special needs in our shared resource program. These needs may be academic medical social-emotional or a combination of all. Students with such needs may demonstrate behaviours that require patience compassion and knowledge of strategies that support neuro-diverse learners.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume how you meet the following qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent;
  • Additional post-secondary coursework in Special Education
  • Experience providing leadership case management and instruction as part of a multi-disciplinary school-based team regarding programing for students with diverse learning needs and behavioural challenges;
  • Experience developing implementing and revising Individual Education Plans Student Learning Plans Behaviour Support Plans and Safety Plans to maximize student potential;
  • Experience using First Nations ways of Knowing Doing and Being to support and instruct students academically socially and behaviourally;
  • Experience teaching a program-based classroom with students who have significant needs is an asset.
  • Training and/or experience in trauma responsive educational practices is an asset.
  • Experience working with students who are English Language Learners (ELL) and students new to Canada is an asset.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications skills and knowledge but also demonstrate suitability for the role and organizational culture:

  • Experience teaching or providing culturally and developmentally responsive approaches for positive behaviour;
  • Experience with transition planning and supporting students with exceptional needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative skills working with parents staff members consultants and community agencies;
  • Willingness and ability to participate in the total school program including religious education and social justice initiatives;
  • An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the faith life of the school community;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
