Additional Salary Information: Minimum Starting Salary $89868; commensurate with education and experience.
Other Conditions: Position Workload: 45% Instruction (25% Academic and 20% Extension) 35% Research 20% Service; subject to adjustment based on operational needs. Duties and responsibilities

  1. Teach existing undergraduate and graduate animal science courses (25% effort) in person or online and develop new courses in alignment with departmental and stakeholder needs and priorities.
  2. Develop and conduct extension teaching (20% effort) and stakeholder mentoring programs focused on improving the production of food animal species in Hawaii particularly beef cattle swine small ruminants (goat sheep) and poultry.
  3. Develop an applied research program (30% effort) aimed at improving food animal production in the state.
  4. Work with faculty administration staff at the CTAHR Agricultural Research and Extension Stations (CARES) centers and stakeholders across the state to develop and improve animal science teaching research and educational programs.
  5. Secure extramural funding for research extension and educational projects.
  6. Publish peer-reviewed original research in animal sciences with a particular focus on animal production and develop extension publications such as technical reports brochures manuals and workshops to disseminate the latest scientific findings.
  7. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in both research and extension.
  8. Participate in and contribute to departmental college university and professional service (20% effort) activities including but not limited to serving on graduate committees department and University committees faculty senate local and/or national professional societies serving on the board of professional organizations.



Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. degree in Animal Sciences or a related field with a focus on food animal species from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of food animal production practices.
  3. Record of peer-reviewed publications as first or corresponding author and demonstrated a familiarity with current food animal research and extension literature.
  4. Ability to teach college or university-level courses in the field of animal nutrition genetics physiology meat science and food animal production.
  5. Ability to plan and organize assigned activities and work effectively with faculty staff administration and various stakeholders including community organizations government agencies industry representatives.
  6. Professionalism in meetings and conferring with others.



Desirable Qualifications

  1. Postdoctoral training in animal sciences or related disciplines with expertise in animal physiology nutrition reproduction genetics meat science or current issues in the food animal industry.
  2. Demonstrated experience in working with livestock producers and other stakeholders engaged in food animal production meat product development and processing meat product quality assessment and improvement and animal facility design and management.
  3. Ability to write grant proposals and acquire and manage competitive extramural funding for research and/or extension activities.
