Job Title: Production Machinist I
Location: Worcester MA 01606
Schedule: 3rd Shift 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM (30-minute lunch)
Duration: 4 Months Extensions
Pay Rate: $25.00/hr.
Position Summary: The Production Machinist I performs precision machining operations on manufactured parts with straightforward configurations and tolerances. This role involves operating a variety of machining equipment including lathes grinders vertical mills and metal cutting saws while following established work orders blueprints and machining procedures.
The Machinist I works under the guidance of supervisors or senior machinists and contributes to high-production manufacturing operations by setting up machines selecting proper tools and maintaining required tolerances.
Key Responsibilities: - Machining & Production
- Set up and operate machining equipment such as lathes vertical mills grinders and metal cutting saws.
- Select appropriate cutting tools feeds and speeds based on materials and job specifications.
- Perform machining operations according to work orders and blueprint specifications.
- Conduct repetitive production machining while maintaining dimensional tolerances.
- Create or modify rough fixturing with assistance from senior machinists when required.
Setup & Process Support: - Determine machining procedures tooling and operation sequence based on clear instructions and work orders.
- Adjust machine settings according to pre-programmed instructions and machining requirements.
- Collaborate with higher-level machinists to improve machining processes and support product development.
Inspection & Quality: - Inspect finished components using precision measuring tools including:
- Micrometers
- Vernier calipers
- Gauges
- Indicators
- Scales
- Verify dimensions and tolerances to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Identify machining issues and consult supervisors or senior machinists for resolution.
Documentation: - Read and interpret blueprints technical drawings and program readouts.
- Follow established machining procedures and production documentation.
- Record production and inspection data as required.
Materials & Equipment: - Machining operations may involve working with:
- Steel
- Aluminum
- Alloys
- Resin materials
- Ceramic materials
- Composite systems
- Equipment and tooling may include:
- Lathes
- Vertical milling machines
- Grinders
- Rotary tables
- Magnetic chucks
- Milling attachments
- Standard machining tools and fixtures
Required Qualifications: - High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum 2 years of machining experience and/or training
- Technical school training apprenticeship or equivalent experience operating CNC or metal fabrication equipment preferred
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Knowledge of basic machining mathematics
- Basic computer skills
- Familiarity with machining references such as the Machinist Handbook
- This role typically requires 4 6 months of experience in the position to become fully proficient and work independently.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment: - Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance
- Ability to stand for extended periods during shifts
- Frequent use of hands and arms for tool operation and machine setup
- Occasional bending kneeling crouching or climbing
- Manufacturing environment conditions may include:
- Exposure to moving machinery
- Noise and dust from machining operations
- Flying metal chips or abrasive particles
- Exposure to coolants lubricants and machining compounds
- Required PPE may include:
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Steel-toe footwear
- Hearing protection
